  1. These types of scams are causing the State of Minnesota to consider forcing coin dealers to register and carry surety bonds before doing business http://www.ag.state.mn.us/Consumer/Publications/FraudulentGoldCoinDealers.asp

    The first paragraph:

Non-delivery Scams. In some cases, gold coin dealers work to build a potential victim’s trust and then get them to send in payment for a supposed delivery of coins, but then fail to deliver the product. This type of non-delivery scam is theft. These fraudsters may rely upon aggressive marketing tactics, flashy websites, and/or a sense of urgency to get people to send them thousands of dollars for coins. In some cases, the fraudster may claim to have access to “special deals” or “once in a lifetime investment opportunities” which they use to convince their victims to act immediately. In other cases, the scammer may try to create a heightened sense of fear about the economy or the stock market. Scam coin dealers that target senior citizens may even try to invoke fear about the potential of another Depression or market crash. Once the fraudulent operator gains the victim’s trust, they pressure them into sending payment, but once they obtain the money, they cut off contact with the person and refuse to deliver the coins or provide a refund. Due to the criminal nature of this type of scam, citizens with information or who believe they may be victims, should report it directly to the criminal authorities, including their local police, sheriff, county attorney, and federally to the Federal Bureau of

  2. Gold and Silver are falling, lots of people I know are panic selling their holdings. Where will this stop. As for my personnal feelings on this I hope it contuines to fall to lows not seen in years. Id love to see gold again below 300.00 a oz (Getting to that level could just be a dream). As you can guess I dont own alot of Gold and I could start buying Gold again.

I think you'd need to be able to correctly model irrational, group think and reaction to accurately predict price fluctuations.

Sicily Akragas AE20 Tetras 4.57g O: Apollo facing right R: Two eagles with hare, one poised to strike the other rearing back it's head. Nice coin with both eagle heads visible, no strike weaknesses, VF grade intact patina

  4. You are correct. The imagery on the medal revives a classical theme to celebrate victory: A soldier stands over the fallen body of an enemy with a pile of weapons as trophy. The sickle and star on the shield clearly represent the Sultanate of the Ottomans. Since there appears to be a breached wall in the background and the date is 1828 this probably celebrates the victory at Varna.

  5. Does anyone know the standards used when striking medals in the 19th century? I have been weighing my pieces and in some instances I have duplicates of a type. While the diameters are consistent the weight is not. The two Jules Grevy medals shown below weigh 165.9g and 150.2g respectively. Two of the Monnaie de Paris type come in at 58.25g and 60.9g. Obviously not being coins maybe +-10% is just the way it worked especially for the base metal medals. I'll have to see if I have two silver versions of the same type.

  6. I'm looking for medals of Jean-Baptiste Daniel Dupuis in museum and national collections. Specifically I'm looking for some rare types I have rarely if ever seen but I'm also hoping for some more in depth information on a few rare types I do have. When I tried that site I could only find one medal of Jules Grevy but I know they have more in the collection. I tried that Simbad contact the staff as well but that seemed like a black hole. Thanks again for checking.

  7. I'm trying to locate on line collections to search for certrain rare medals. I know there's a large collection in Paris but even with the translated site I have issues navigating the BNF site to search only the numismatic collection versus all the manuscripts and images as well. Is there someone who could help point me to what I need to do to narrow that search?

    Thanks!
