  1. Edited 7/27/05 with haul from ANA World's Fair of Money in San Francisco.
  2. At least radiactivity can be easily tracked (geiger counter, scintillation, etc). Some compounds that are probably as bad or worse are much hard to keep an eye on.
  3. I'll be keeping this coin, at the very least as a reference piece. There were a few things I noticed when looking at it under magnification that I disregarded at the time. I can always stare at this coin as a comparison piece to look for signs of mechanical cleaning. VF net grade isn't too bad.
  4. Everyone: thanks for your comments. I guess the real question is what would we net grade a coin like this? VF? I snapped another photo of the coin this morning from a slightly different angle. I thought I had removed the plastic the first time, but it looks as if I had not. pardon the flash glare. No plastic over the coin:
  5. I recently picked up from ebay an 1876 Seated Lib quarter to complete the seated liberty quarters section of my type set. When I purchased the coin I planned to inspect it thoroughly, tilt it, use a loupe etc. to find any signs of cleaning. I saw a scratch or three in a few places, but it didn't seem all that odd or unusual. I left positive feedback and placed the coin in my Dansco. Just tonight I was snapping a photo of an 1856 0 Seated Lib quarter using indirect flash, when I noticed in the pictures something I hadn't seen before on my 1876 Seated Lib Quarter. Cleaning or no? if it is, I think I've found a better way than glaring under the loupe to find signs of a whizzed or polished coin.
  6. Most expensive coin thus far: Paid around $60 for it. coin is a little darker in hand. I have a half cent on the way that cost around the same.
  7. Seven 2005-D Buffalo Nickels. See the trade forum for more details.
  8. I think we need a 1 and 2 dollar coin, and smallest bill be a five. Bills wear out too quickly. Perhaps even a Sac-size dollar coin is too large, and we certainly don't want people lugging around Ike-sized monstrosities. Australia has managed to produce $1 and $2 coins without pocket-busting consequences. They also make their currency out of a plastic rather than cloth/paper, so they last longer. Maybe it's a stange country, even their rather large 50c coins circulate.
  9. I need: 1999 Delaware quarter in pristine condition, business strike 2005 P buffalo nickels or simply make me an offer in trade..
  10. I purchase from ebay and a coin shop up the road called "The Silver Baron" in Alameda CA. The owner of the Silver Baron is a good chap. he'll chat and rummage in his safe as I flip through his 2x2s. I have some coins from him i'll never sell because they look too darn cool. I have some I'm already replacing. most of my type set was purchased there. My Avatar is a silver baron purchase. Hardly "high grade" but I like it a lot. I grade it as VG, although I see similar grades on ebay as Fine. ebay: i purchase lots of "packaged" items. foreign mint and proof sets in the original sealed packet, for example. I've started slowly buying raw coins on ebay, but very slowly. Coinpeople: one purchase so far, from blackhawk. Nice pair of seated liberty dimes at a good price.
  11. I received as an unadvertised and greatly appreciated bonus from an ebay dealer years ago, some crisp uncirculated world banknotes. I'll be darned if I can find them. good seller though, nice foreign mint and proof sets, and a bonus in every auction.
  12. I'm working on: Dansco 7070 Type Set 1800-Present. many holes, see my posting in the Advertising "want to buy" forum for details. Dansco Statehood Quarter Date Set Album Missing New Jersey 99, and the 2005 Minnesota, Oregon, Kansas, West Va. Dansco General U.S. Coins holding area for extra coins i want to keep and storage for coins upgraded out of the type set Eagle albums: Certified Ikes Silver and Clad, incl. proofs; Proofs are complete, no business strikes yet. Clad Proof Sets 1999-2008; missing 1999 Silver Proof Sets, 1999-2008; up-to-date Mint Sets 1999-2008: missing 2003 P & D Focusing on the Type Set right now..

  14. French Fries refers to the "cut" of the potato; when I used to work in the Restaurant Biz, we would sometimes refer to thin fries as "french cut", wedges as "steak fries", Ore Ida fries as "crinkle Cut" and really thin fries as "shoestrings". When we were busy, everything was a @#$ing french fry. In fact, everything was referring to as @#$ing, especially when talking to each other. there is, as I recall, a term in food prep called "frenching". to french food is to trim the fat by cutting the item into thin strips. this is where i suspect the term "french fry" comes from, it refers to potatoes that have been 'frenched'. In france, I believe they are referred to as something like "pomme frites" and they actually originated in belgium. In espanol, they are Papas Fritas. This could all be apocryphal, so i await a knowing correction from a linguist or food historian.
  15. Type coins, 1800-Present. Filling a Dansco 7070 is my current big project. Currently have lots of holes. Foreign mint and proof sets: - 1950s-1970s mexican mint sets with silver and those lovely 20 centavos coins - UK minted proof sets from the 1960s/70s. Ceylon (now Sri lanka), India, various african nations, Bhutan, etc. - USSR and Russian mint/proof sets - Pre-Decimal UK/Australia/Ireland/Commonwealth coinage Currently on hold while I put together the Dansco 7070 Mint and proof sets from 1999 until perpetuity eventually plan to backfill the prestige sets from the 80s/90s. Ikes - Silver and Clad Proof Issues in PCGS PR69 (this is complete) - Silver and Clad Circ Strikes in PCGS MS60-something, haven't started on these yet. - Silver Proof Issues in Mint Packaging, with cameo. (1971 and 1972 are complete) - Silver Circ strikes in Mint Packaging. Currently I have no plans to go completely nuts with the die varieties. with that in mind, this is an easy set to complete, and I like the Ike. This is the set I'll leave to my children which they'll think is a lot of money and take to the coin dealer and go home very sad because none of what I have is rare. Things i'm falling in love with and will most likely collect more of or spend a premium to get the best examples possible: Shield Nickels Silver 3c Nickel 2c Seated liberty coins Walking Lib halves Commem. Halves Ahh, my bank account will be in trouble for some time.
  16. made it over fine, but I was still tying up ends on the old site -- any way to get back over there? i have an email addr or three that I need to snag. -- Fjord (new avatar, Seated Lib instead of Mex 20c)
