thanks guys! it's good to be home.
i used to think the bahraini 5 was the toughest note to find for bahrain...but now i'm realizing it's only the second toughest. once i track down a p-22, it'll be smooth sailing. i'll just be a few design variations away from having a complete set of every bahraini note ever made! p-22 is one tough mama-jamma, i gotta say.
picking up the panama opened up a can of worms for me. besides the exceptions i made for american, confederate, and republic of texas notes, i pretty much stuck to 1961-date moderns. now i have a few greenlands on the way, and i'm on the lookout for a nice palestine. i think i'll finally be needing the pre-modern volume of the standard catalog.
u.s. large size is my last frontier...as for tpg's, 50% of all of my u.s. currency came to me in PMG/PCGS note slabs. i cut them all out.
i don't care much for slabs, but i think panama will be staying in it's plastic. for the most part, i like PMG & PCGS's exceptional/premium paper quality designations. as a buyer, it helps me find notes that are original and unmolested without having to travel to see the note in person. otherwise, currency tpg's are full of drama.

aye, ats is where i picked up the original mucha note for $15. i actually picked up quite a few test notes from ats, and all of them were under $15. on ebay...haven't seen very many in that price range. but $80 is definitely way over for the nt graf note. i highly recommend using the 'best offer' option on all of that particular dealers items.

i've still never ever seen another pushkin note similar to the one i got from you. a couple would pop up now and then, but it would have 'specimen' in red, or something else different about it. very pleased with the trade.

i especially like the 500 note from the bulgarian national bank. the silver mask on the left is supposed to be a humongous hologram. the jules verne note's design looks cramped and overcrowded because of all the security features they crammed onto it, and the swiss note color scheme is a little too loud and obnoxious for my tastes. no kidding about seizures! but in the end, the jules verne note represents one of the most technologically advanced "security printing notes" ever produced, (i almost said banknotes), and the other will be my first ever promotional polymer note. i can't wait to see them!
sm- another mucha note finally showed up on ebay earlier today. three were listed for $60, but the seller accepted a best offer of $40. lol...a far cry from the $15 i spent on the first one! oh well...they're getting harder and harder to find, when i used to see them everywhere.

2 years and 10 days after my original post, i finally acquired the jules verne note!
heheh...i hit the promotional note motherlode and went on another buying spree. i know i was supposed to not buy anything for a year, but i failed that plan miserably.

heheh...i picked that one up from a disney collector. they're a pretty hardcore group, and only 500 of those notes were printed. you can tell your wife i spent plenty more than $50 dollars for "mickey mouse money".
i have scottishmoney to thank for getting me into disneydollars, but he has kids. heheh...i don't have any excuse whatsoever for having so many.

that french note is simply awesome. notes like that make me seriously rethink my current policy of modern + uncirculated only. the prices definitely keep me in check!
those haitian notes are a great design, aren't they? i was going to mention them in the 'favorite design' thread, but the criteria was to pick out just one note.
other nicely designed series i like are taiwan, malta, switzerland, hungary, and scotland's clydesdale bank. also portugal's ships & explorers series, before they made the switch to the euro.and i know my other posts on this topic stated my buying was finished for the nexyt year or so...but i fell victim to an impulse buy. it's not even a real banknote! heheh...this is my last one for sure. no more buying after this!

my dad was in the navy and i was an elementary student at bahrain school. it was great! nobody had to lock their doors, the field trips were awesome (we toured the ancient dilmun mentioned in gilgamesh, old forts, pearl diving dhows, navy ships), and there was still a sizeable british population and lots of english-speaking bahrainis. heheh...i also remember bob hope coming down for a uso christmas special. unfortunately, i also remember when the uss stark was hit by a missile, and the next year when the uss vincennes shot down a civilian airliner.
my school was ran by the department of defense dependents school system, but it was classified as a private international school. the navy base was pretty small, so only about a quarter of the students were americans. so, school was off on thursdays and fridays and the week started on saturday. during ramadan, our glass-walled cafeteria was curtained up so that the fasters didn't have to see us chowing down.
whenever we'd go on field trips though, my parents would give me a few dinars to spend on souvenirs. the highest bill i ever got to handle was a 5-dinar note (about $15), with the rest being 1's and halves. when i first started collecting notes, getting the 10 & 20 was one of my first priorities. being able to hold a crispy new 20 in my hand, and to know it was mine...that was one of the greatest feelings ever.
to this day, money from the countries i lived in still are and always will be my favorite. there's just so many good memories attached to them!

thanks! besides a few small purchases here and there, i don't foresee another major buy for at least another two-three years. this last spree of mine made a humungous dent in my e-5 paycheck.

Until a few recent packages from you and another CPer, the only foreign notes I had were from Qatar! Although it helps to have lived there for a year and my mom goes back multiple times a year for business. Though she went about a month ago and forgot to bring back some nice crisp notes....
So Qatari Riyals and a US Large Size... the only two notes I have over you.
there's a base in qatar that they send soldiers to for relaxation. my unit in Iraq is small enough, (and cool enough), that we can afford to send everybody once. the bigger units use the small number of seats available as bait to dangle in front of their people to make them jump through hoops. my 4-day pass to visit will be sometime in june or july. so yeah...i'll be hitting up the local dealers for those qatar & dubai notes.
but don't worry, i don't foresee myself going anywhere near large-sized notes for a looong while. even if i had the money for a cu set of 1899 silvers or 1918 nationals, i'd probably go the small sized route and pick up a cu set of large denoms. and unless i hit it big on the lottery, (fingers crossed), i'll be nowhere near even thinking about picking up a set of cu educationals!

i lived in bahrain from 1986-1988. that was my first introduction to foreign money.
bahrain has been one of my favorites ever since. if i can just find an uncirculated 1964 5 dinar note, i can pick up the more common 10 dinar, and my entire bahrain series would be just about complete! http://public.fotki.com/sanmiguel/world_banknotes/bahrain/
as far as 2 digit numbers...i really haven't payed any attention to serial numbers until recently. i only have one 2-digit "real money" note:

lol...plenty! Palestine, 1962 Katanga issues (1960 issues are ugly!), Greenland, Sarawak, Malaya, British Borneo, Italian Somaliland, German East Africa, Monaco, Keeling & Cocos, St Pierre et Miquelon, Reunion, Zanzibar, Qatar & Dubai, Rhodesia & Nyasland, Panama, and Tibet.
And that's just countries I don't have. From what I do have, my South Americans can use improvement, I still want a Seychelles "Sex" note, and I need a proper series run from the Bahamas. On the US side, I don't have a single large-sized note, light green seal, chartered bank national, fractional, or obsolete.
There's no such thing as running out of stuff to collect.

I see a lot of people have Antarctica notes, undoubtedly mostly bought by tourist. Well, if someone sees a CIRCULATED note from Antarctica, I'd like to see it!
lol, i doubt antarctica has very many tourists. these notes are a fundraising project for mcmurdo station and are redeemable for cash until they expire. if you let them expire without cashing them in, you've just made a donation in return for a "souvenir". i think these new notes are definitely worth the few bucks they're selling for. great new design, and they're plastic!
also, the penguins remind me of a certain futurama episode.

yep! the purple one with a hologram. it was released only for a short period before the fakes started showing up, and it was quickly replaced with the peach notes. very hard to find! i've never seen one for sale in any grade, but managed to snag this picture from ron wise's site. if you can find one for me, i'll be forever grateful!
