  1. I couldn't even begin to consider cleaning something like those. To small and to cheap. Possibly the cleaning would cost more than a new one.
  2. Didn't know what happened to that forum. I used to go there and one day, POOF, it was gone.
  3. Just saying US coins is not really clear. Notice some say a type or denomination. Some say a certain date and type such as a 1909S VDB. For US coins and being specific, most would have to say coins such as the 1913 Liberty Head Nickel or the 1894S Liberty Head Dime. Being vague allows many people with type sets to mention very few they have never owned since they usually have one of almost all. For me I've never even seen a US coin dated in the 1600's. Never had nor will have a 1933 Double Eagle. And if you have a Red Book, see that listing on pages 423 to 427? I don't have any of those either.
  4. They do now. I suspect they use the same one we do.
  5. I am a male, married, two kids, great job, own a Jewlery and coin stonw and a pilot. He not only owns a pilot but has a thing called a coin STONW. I sure wonder what that is. Hopefully not illigal.
  6. As with everyone else, always glad to see old faces. Sorry to hear about the bad luck with jobs. I've never lived in California but from what everyone says, jobs are not plentiful. In the Northern Ill. area it seams jobs are all over the place. Every time I go anywhere, I see signs saying help wanted. Hopefully all there will be OK soon.
  7. Unless you plan on selling all those, why spend money on having them graded and slabbed? Just store them as best as you can and you'll have something for tomorrow. You can always get them graded later if you plan on selling them. If not, just spend some time looking up all the price guides on the internet. Such as Numismedia or the PCGS web site. It could be fun knowing what they are worth today and who knows, even much more tomorrow.
  8. I didn't read it. I'm to used to coins vanishing such as the 2 cent, 3 cent, Buffalo Nickel and many, many more. So what is just one more coin to be remembered. I'm just used to coins vanishing.
  9. A long time ago I used to get pennies and nickels by the bag. I remember the bags of pennies were $50 but don't remember the cost of the nickel bags. I filled several Albums of nickels with those and stopped collecting them after that.
  10. Your photos are all great. Any improvement would be to small to even notice. Focus is fantastic. Lighting is great. Smart move to use black background.
  11. Yes all interesting however, not sure why people use this forum to quote others works instead of thier own thoughts, ideas, information. Always sort of reminds to just skip that type of post. Why not just give a reference to something and let people go there is they choose? Hate to be pessimistic but just my opinion.
  12. Interesting information. Oddly enough and although most collectors collect Dimes, not a real lot of books out there on that coin. At coin shows I see books on just about everything on Earth in the way of coinage. But no books on Dimes. There is a book on the market on Mercury Dimes but so far never seen one at a coin show, coin store nor book stores.
  13. As I noted I've read that article and attempted to either prove or disprove the possibilities. Note for example their usage of Copper Foil, not a Copper coin. Also, the purity of the Copper Foil was not discussed not the type and proportions of moisture in the solutions not the exact amount of light required. As a chemist I find all those and many more statistics important. I've been trying all possible varieties of that situation for some time now and I would assume I need the same Sun they used.
  14. I've read that silly post. And as an ex-Chemistry professor in a Junior College every time I read something like that I experiment to see if there is any possible truth to those statements. As I mentioned I've tried that silly one many times and so far nothing has ever happened to the coins. In the past I've mixed tap water, distilled water, Actone, placed in the Sun, dark, cold and just about anywhere and everywhere under numerous conditions and so far nothing. Try to remember that on the internet there are extensively erroneous statements and why, I'll just never know. Possibly the same reason people just do odd things.
  15. Dipping any coin in Acetone without extensive research should never be attempted. Note above it says Brief dip, however, this statement omits the numerous problems and precautions that should be taken when using any dangerous and combustable solutions or substances. Dip in what? Using what to dip? Type of vessel to be used? Ventilation? Location of the dipping? Acetone, and many other combustable materials should only be used in areas and by people that are aware of all the possible dangers. Prior to such usage I suggest the looking up of the ATSDR on line. This is the Agency for Toxic Substances & Disesase Registry. A government agency that explains most of the dangers of Acetone not usually mentioned on a coin forum web site. AND as to Acetone on Copper Coins. That is what is usually refered to as an old wives tale. Pardon if there are any old wives reading but that is an expression from the old days. I presently have 10 Copper Cents in a jar of Acetone that have been there now for several weeks. They have been in the Sun, shade, heat and almost everywhere around my garage and yard. Nothing has happened to them at all. Not an experiment. I just put them there to clean them and forgot to take them out. Keep moving them around and some day I will take them out. The first time I heard that story about Acetone and Copper I placed Copper, Silver, Clad coins or several denominations in a glass jar with Acetone. In the Sun for several days, in the dark for several more, back to the Sun for a while and the end results were the Roosevelt Dime did look cleaner. Nothing else happened.
  16. As already noted Finger Nail Polish Remover is not pure Acetone. Read the lables. And note that different brands contain different materials. Some are actually harmfull to coins or any metals. Some may contain warnings to not allow this substance to contact metals. The other substances may well add corrosions to coins. Also, never wipe any valuable coin with even cotton swabs. You would be amazed at how delicate the serface of some coins are. On this or most coin forum web sites the usage of Acetone is usually well covered. Not sure if here there is a search thing but for the usage and dangers of Acetone, also try Google. Heed the warnings about the usage of Acetone as an extreamely flamable substance.
  17. Your kidding of course. I thought everyone knew about the TCforum. It's for toned coins only.
  18. I usually like polls of any kind on the internet. There is naturally one small problem. If you poll people on a coin forum, you only get coin people. Even a coin collecting subject would be interesting to have a poll all over the place on the internet. The reason is there are virtually millions of coin collectors that do not belong to coin forums. They may be looking at that utube thing or my space or craigs list but no coin forums. Not sure if I spelled those things right since I don't use them
  19. Don't blame you for being bitter. So why not complain to our government and demand that everyone now has to state: 1. Push 1 for Spanish 2. Push 2 for French 3. Press 3 for English. 4. And just in case there are any still here, Press 4 for American.
  20. Interesting looking coin. Wonder if that is the real year of a commemorative notation.
  21. Didn't you know there is a toned coin forum? Not sure of the exact name but it is a forum dedicated to toned coins. Myself, I'm a coin collector and when ever I get a toned coin, into a cleaning solution it goes. Sorry about that to the toned people but I just think coins should look the way they did when they came from the mint.
  22. Have you ever wondered what someone would be answering this question in about 50 or 60 years. Imagine some saying coins dated way back in the 1990's. WOW.
  23. As I said a few posts ago. I'm so old that when I was a kid many, many sitting Liberty coins were common in change. Mercury Dimes were the norm except for numerous Liberty Heads. I remember when they stopped making the Walking Liberty Halves and everyone thought What Now? Indian Head Cents were as common as Lincoln Cents. I really have no idea what the oldest coin I pulled out of circulation but probably many from the 1800's since so many were always around. AHHH, if I only knew then what I know now.
  24. Imagine that. Someone noticed our grading standards can not compete with the British. Just kidding you know.
  25. As noted. Although some may say AU is About Uncirculated. Trivial and probably no difference. Not sure about any difference between BU and MS either. Many dealers say BU instead of MS if they are from a long time ago when there was only Uncirculated and no such thing as Mint State. Confused? Me too.
