  1. The most exciting news: I sent a pictoral depiction of the set to The Queen, including texts and pictures of my grandmother, who resembled The Queen when she was alive, and have received a very nice reply from one of Her Majesty's Ladies-in-Waiting on Buckingham Palace sationary, stating ...the Queen wishes me to express her thanks for your kind words and was very interested to see the depiction of your collection. She was especially interested to hear about and to see the pictures you sent of your Grandmother...Her Majesty hopes you will continue enjoying your coin collecting and wishes you her very best regards.

  4. Here is the response from a New Zealander...

    HTH

    Andy

Thanks for all the great research! Amazing what information is out there, when you know where to look.

Any pointers or advice on uploading coin pics? I haven't done this yet and plan to try to get some pics of the collection up this weekend.

    Thanks, again.

  5. 2.jpg?psid=1

The fern leaf reverse was only used with that portrait in 1979. It has a mintage of 25,000 with 85,000 in proof. The 1980 had a fantail, 1981 Oak, 1982 Takahe.

Thanks andyg! I found out the 1980, 1981 & 1982 Dollars are technically considered commemoratives and the whole group (1979-1982) was minted in Canada, but I haven't been able to find out anything about the designer of the "new" portrait or why this design was adopted for only these issues. It appears that the Arnold Machin (2nd portrait) was introduced in New Zealand in 1967 to coincide with the switch from pence/shilling/pound issues to the decimal issues, and that only the dollars featured this 79-82 break in it's use, when the Machin portrait was resumed in 1983 until ultimately being replaced by the Raphael Maklouf "3rd" portrait in 1986.

Also, what country's coin is the picture you included in your reply? It looks similar to the 4th portrait - alternate version used on some of the St. Helena, Ascencion & Tristan da Cunha Islands group coins, but couped, without the bust.

  6. Always thought the later NZ dollars were NCLT?

There is another so far unique portrait (not NZ) from a one year issue circulation coin....

    Which one is that?

The 1979-1981 New Zealand Dollars were minted with a portrait that was exclusive to those years and the reverse of the coin was the standard Coat of Arms, crowned with Silver Fern fronds surrounding it. I think these were transitional pieces, but I do believe they were issued as regular coinage. This portrait was abandoned in favor of the traditional "2nd" portrait of the queen which was used on UK coins from 1968 to 1984 and most other country's QEII coins shortly thereafter, until the 3rd portrait was introduced in 1985. However, I don't know why that 79-81 New Zealand portrait was scrapped - maybe the Queen didn't like it!

Maybe someone on the forum knows the whole story...any collectors from New Zealand out there?

  7. Thanks, all, for the positive comments.

I should mention the bank notes portion of the collection. Two former British possessions, Malta and Trinidad & Tobago,

never issued coins with the Queen's portrait, so I purchased bank notes with her picture to represent these countries:

A 1967 Malta One Pound note in AU condition, which features a uncrowned bust portrait of the Queen garbed in the Royal Order of Malta mantle.

A 1964 Tinidad & Tobago One Dollar note in VF+ condition, which features the same uncrowned portrait, but only from the shoulders up.

I also bought 2 vintage Canadian notes, which have the first, young portrait of the Queen:

A 1954 Two Dollar Bill (UNC)

A 1967 One Dollar Bill, issued for the Centennial of Canadian Confederation (UNC)

Additionally, I have notes I personally collected from some of the countries I've visited on past vacations:

A 2000 Bank of England Ten Pound Note (VF)

An Australian Five Dollar Bill (Unc)

A New Zealand Twenty Dollar Bill (Unc)

    A 2001 Bahamas 50 Cents Bill (Unc)

A 1974 Bahamas Three Dollar Bill (Unc)

(These last two I just got this past February in Nassau, directly from the Main Bank)

Finally, I have relatives who moved to Belize a little over a year ago, to open a pizza place, of all things!

They brought me a complete set of Belize bank notes with the Crowned portrait of the Queen that is used on

most Caribbean Countries currency (that feature the Queen) - These are the 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 & 100 Dollar notes.

The entire collection of 145 coins, 15 bank notes & some stamps are housed in a 3-ring binder with an illustrated

14 page biography of the Queen that I put together as a preface to the collection. Oh yes, and also a page that

shows pictures of the various official flags of the Queen, as well as the flags of her Governors General.

I'll get some pictures up this weekend.

  8. A while ago on another forum - I put together this short list of circulation coinage portraits.....

    1.jpg?psid=1

There is a portrait I missed (on a circulation coin) too...

Thanks for the pics! Looks like I'll need "#7" to make my set more complete. #4 is technically a commemorative and the missing circulation examples are the 1979-1981 New Zealand Dollar only, plus the "original" 1st protrait, which shows the Queen with bare shoulders (this was quickly abandoned for propriety's sake!). I'll post these, plus some of the pics I have for commemoratives, when I get the chance - I have 17 additional portraits.

  9. After a fashion, yes. I've been toying with mounting parallel Pence/Shillings of the Empire/Commonwealth collections--not all Empire/Commonwealth states were on £sd, so the penny collection would be the larger and more complete, in terms of the nations involved. So this is a list that is Relevant To My Interests. :)

Are you not going after non-portrait issues, like the smaller denomination East Africa and British West Africa issues?

So far, I've kept the collection to only portrait coins, which are more intersting to me.

This has proven more difficult, of course, especially concerning those countries where maybe only one or two issues exist that fit the criteria. The hardest to find of the ones I have, so far, was British West Africa, since the only QEII portrait is on the 1957-H 3 pence and there were only 800 issued. I know I paid too much for the coin, but I may never get another opportunity to find one, so I jumped in with my heart, instead of my head!

The St. Vincent & The Grenadines, which I do not have, has proven to be equally challenging to find. I did find a collector in Siberia, Russia, that has one of the C/N versions, but he is not inclined to part with it, despite my very high offers and willingness to make trades of more valuable and rare issues.

Also, I had to "loosen" the definition of portrait, in the traditional sense, as some of the countries' coins I have included have depictions that are not the standard profile portraits most people think of when referring to coins. When I have the time to spare, I will post some pictures of the coins in the collection.

Going back to your question; I have toyed with the idea of buying an Edward VIII coin from BWA, just to have an authentic representation of a coin from his reign, since I would never be able to afford a coin with his portrait on it, even if I could find one available!

Thank you for your comments and I wish you success in mounting your new collection.

  10. I am a collector of World and US coins. My latest obsession has been the completion of a set of every country's coins that now feature, or have featured in the past, the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.

By my reckoning, there are 78 different possible countries, territories, dependencies & colonies that make up the list.

I have been able to collect 76 of these (missing St. Vincent & the Grenadines and Swaziland) and I am wondering if there are others out there with similar collections. Also, if anyone knows of any countries with her portrait that I might be missing from my list, below.

My collection also includes the several different portrait types, so I have "repeats" for many countries, which brings the total to 145 individual examples.

(I also have a separate "World Monarchies" collection that includes several dozen QEII coins, as well as about 20+ UK, Canadian, Australian & New Zealand proof sets with the Queen's portraiture.)

The geographic divisions that currently feature the Queen:

1 - Alderney (One of the 9 Channel Islands; A dependency of The Bailiwick of Guernsey, a British Crown Dependency; commemorative issues)

2 - Ascension Island (A constituent part of the British Overseas Territory of St. Helena & Ascension; commemorative issues; SEE Saint Helena & Ascension, below)

3 - Australia (Circulating, commemorative & bullion coinage)

4 - Belize (Formerly, British Honduras)

5 - Bermuda (British Overseas Territory)

6 - British Antarctic Territory (commemorative issues)

7 - British Indian Ocean Territories (commemorative issues)

8 - British Virgin Islands (British Overseas Territory)

9 - Canada (Circulating, commemorative & bullion coinage)

10 - Cayman Islands (British Overseas Territory)

11 - Cook Islands (A former dependency of New Zealand, now an independent nation in a "free-association" with New Zealand)

12 - East Caribbean States (A monetary union of several British island territories in the Caribbean, some of whom also issue their own commemorative coinage, but these countries do not separately feature QE II on circulating coinage; Formerly, "British Caribbean Territories - Eastern Group" and, briefly, "East Caribbean Territories")

13 - Falkland Islands (British Overseas Territory)

14 - Fiji [islands] (Former Commonwealth nation that still uses QE II on their coins, but has announced that she will no longer appear on future issues, beginning in 2012)

15 - Gibraltar (British Overseas Territory)

16 - Gough Island (An island in the Tristan da Cunha Island group, which is a constituent part of the British Overseas Territory of St. Helena & Ascensioc; NCLT - non-circulating legal tender coins, issued for collectors)

17 - Guernsey (A British Crown Dependency; officially The Bailiwick of Guernsey)

18 - Isle of Man (A British Crown Dependency)

19 - Jersey (A British Crown Dependency; officially The Bailiwick of Jersey)

20 - New Zealand (Circulating, commemorative & bullion coinage)

21 - Nightingale Island (An island in the Tristan da Cunha Island group, which is a constituent part of the British Overseas Territory of St. Helena & Ascension; NCLT - non-circulating legal tender coins, issued for collectors)

22 - Niue [islands] (A former dependency of New Zealand; now, self-governing in a free association with New Zealand)

23 - Pitcairn Islands (A British Overseas Territory)

24 - Saint Helena (A constituent part of the British Overseas Territory of St. Helena & Ascension; commemorative issues; SEE BELOW)

25 - Saint Helena & Ascension (A British Overseas Territory comprised of Saint Helena Island with constituents of Ascension Island and the six Tristan da Cunha Islands - standard coinage for the Territory is issued from Saint Helena & Ascension and, separately from Tristan da Cunha, while each of the 3 individual islands also issue commemorative coinage in their own names; additionally 3 other islands, which are part of the Tristan da Cunha Islands, issue NCLT - non-circulating legal tender coins, issued for collectors: Gough, Nightingale & Stoltenhoff Islands)

26 - Solomon Islands (Former British Protectorate)

27 - South Georgia & The South Sandwich Islands (Dependencies of the British Overseas Territory of the Falkland Islands; commemorative issues)

28 - Stoltenhoff Island (An island in the Tristan da Cunha Island group, which is a constituent part of the British Overseas Territory of St. Helena & Ascension; NCLT - non-circulating legal tender coins, issued for collectors)

29 - Tokelau [islands] (A Territory of New Zealand)

30 - Tristan da Cunha (A constituent part of the British Overseas Territory of St. Helena & Ascension; mostly commemorative issues; SEE Saint Helena & Ascension, above)

31 - Turks & Caicos Islands (British Overseas Territory)

32 - Tuvalu (Formerly, the Ellice Islands, a British Crown Colony with the Gilbert Islands, which are now known as Kiribati - SEE NEXT SECTION)

33, 34, 35, 36 & 37 - United Kingdom of Great Britain & Northern Ireland (Circulating, commemorative & bullion coinage) NOTE: The United Kingdom sometimes issues coins that feature separate reverses with the national emblems of it's 4 constituent countries: England, Scotland, Wales & Northern Ireland. Therefore, a collector of Queen Elizabeth II coins may also wish to include examples of these 4 types plus a United Kingdom emblem coin, to bring the total for a series of United Kingdom coins to 5 individual examples.

Additionally, Queen Elizabeth II has also been featured on past and/or commemorative coinage of the following countries, dependencies, colonies and territories:

38 - Antigua & Barbuda (Part of the East Caribbean States; Only one commemorative issue: a 1985 Royal Visit, in Copper-Nickel or Silver Proof)
