constanius
The Inauguration of the Milan Cathedral Aug 18th 1818. Carlo Gaetano Gaisruck (also known as Karl Kajetan Gaisruck) Archbishop of Milan. Reverse shows view of Milan cathedral. Bronze 45mm by Francesco Putinati. This my second example of this medal. My first example. Larger images of the darker medal. This one has a small hole positioned above the main doorway, plus another small hole above the exergue. These holes are missing in the lighter medal. The darker one has a slightly thicker planchet & weighs 50 grams. The other 44 grams. A pin will only just enter the holes a miniscule amount before hitting the bottom. What are these holes for? Any ideas? The hole above the doorway. The hole above the exergue. constanius
I think the second example, with the holes must be made in two pieces, then joined together with a lead filling and the holes are vent holes.
