jlueke
I had to go with the Maple leaf. I don't like the lack of imagination evident when you rehash designs. The Walker was great, but this is now. The pandas are cute but they don't represent anything and I do like allegory.
corkykile
I voted for the ASE because it is the 'American Way' ? Actually, of the ASE's I own, I have never taken them from from their capsules and actually held them in my hand. It was when I got my first Morgan Dollar that I learned to like real silver. The beauty, the history, and the weight of the coin in my hand made me feel like I had real money. For me it is a toss up... used Morgans or shiny mint proof ASE's.... hmmm.... don't think I can truly say which is my favorite. Corky
tabbs
Well, people who prefer "the European Way" will soon have an alternative. As far as I know, the Austrian Mint will present a "Silver Phil" at the World Money Fair next month. That would be a 1 oz silver coin, designed like the gold Vienna Philharmonic pieces. This is the gold piece which has been issued since 1989. Well, imagine that design in silver ... Christian

Christian A country which historically has produced some very lovely coinage cannot do any better than re-hashing a design used on the gold? Couldn't something like this fraulein grace such a coin? ageka
It is hard to beat the Swiss with their vreneli girl or the french with their Marianne girl so they are not trying
tabbs
Couldn't something like this fraulein grace such a coin? The Austrian Mint is not exactly known for "modern" designs but I don't think they are that "backward oriented". As for when the coin will actually be available, and what the design will actually be like - well, we will see. But the Philharmonic bullion pieces are very well known ... Scottishmoney
It is hard to beat the Swiss with their vreneli girl or the french with their Marianne girl so they are not trying The Marianne is one of my favourite LMU coins. As for the Swiss, I have a slight preference for the Helvetia, and when they come I will post images.

tabbs
As for Marianne and Helvetia: Yes, both are neat, except neither of the two is a silver bullion coin ... Dull but not bullion either, I'm afraid. (Should not be hard to get it cheap though. ) In fact, this Austrian piece will be the first silver bullion euro coin. And I just read that the bank which announced the Silver Phil ahead of time may have violated some NDA, hehe. Christian
Johnny 1989
I'm giving a "shout out" for the Canadian maple leaf the only one I own but I think it's a great coin. BTW, why No Britannia's???? They've had some great designs for those over the years, 2007 is my personal favourite (missing years are where designs may repeat): 2008 2007 2005 2004 2003 2001

Johnny 1989
Wow. Those brittanias are really nice Glad you like them, I only own the 2007 one, need to get the 2008 & previous ones, BTW for the missing years (of the 2000's anyway) the design repeated is the one shown for 2004, I think Oops missed one: 1997 & 1999 Standing Britannia is used for 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004 & 2006
corkykile
Oops missed one: 1997 & 1999 Oh my oh my, that Brit is a beauty. I might even be tempted to trade in one of my 2007 proof silver eagles for one of those. I guess until you see all the coins that are out there yet to see, it is impossible to say which one is the nicest, prettiest, most handsome, most artistic, and has the best quality of minting results. Yes, there are a lot of cute coins... pandas for one... but they don't tug at my heart like the Morgans and ASE's. (and now that 97 & 99 brit coin you showed us)...where will it all end! Scottishmoney
They have had many great designs, but this one with the look of the British Lion is a classic. I need that one.
tabbs
Agreed, those Britannia designs are very nice. Well, the 2003 piece is quite different - also a good design too but it does not really fit in well. The others are tempting ... also because it's always the same theme but in many different styles. If I collected silver bullion coins, I would probably get those. But I don't. Christian

That design was the one that won it for me, once I get payed at the end of the month (our firm pays us the last working day or December, which was 21st December and we don't get payed until the 31st) I shall seek out the rest. Guest Sasquatch
The Britannias are very nice but they too, like the Maple Leaf, suffer from being a one side design. Of course, that makes it much easier to decide which side to put down if you were using a one sided folder.
Guest Sasquatch
Actually, of the ASE's I own, I have never taken them from from their capsules and actually held them in my hand. Somewhere around here I have one (non-proof) as a pocket piece.

See now I actually prefer a Royal Portrait on one side, then again I suppose that's because a portrait of a monarch has been on our coins for the last 500 odd years

YeOldeCollector
There has often been portraits on our coins since Offa's reign, 8th C so about 1300 years. Clive.
