Art
I'd guess exposure to chlorine or sulphur.
Burks
After a little cleaning I've determined the date to be 1875. Very hard to see in the scans but at the rigth angle I can make out the bottom part of a 5 and the top right part of it. Nothing special but I'm happy! The coin before was horrible in hand. Had trouble telling what it was. After cleaning it is very easy to tell.

Burks
I actually kind of liked it more "before". If the details were as clear in hand as they were on the scan I would never of touched it.

Whizzer
By the way, what is that green stuff that looks like lichen? Does it come off with acetone, assuming one wanted it off?
