Scottishmoney
I have wanted one of these for a long time, finally I found one. This image is very close to the actual size of the piece, it is 21cm in diameter, or about 8.25" The shiney bronze looking thing is a USA cent for comparison of size. Scottishmoney
Jesus. You can knock someone off with that O_O I have several coins that were more suitable as weapons, couple of pieces of plate money from Sweden, a Manilla from Nigeria, AE 46 from the Ptolemy III of Egypt, a couple of the Siberians, and lets not forget that corral of 5 Kopeks. I need to do a page on huge coins.
gxseries
LOL copper plates and 5 kopeks Too bad the Russians didn't go far enough to make precious metal plates or it would have been too interesting Imagine if this did circulate http://www.goldbergauctions.com/cgi-bin/vi...ale=31&lot=1868

I love that coin, it must have been quite a job to create.

gxseries
A handy link here ^_^ http://www.joelscoins.com/odd.htm#katanga The Katanga cross is a scarce and unusual piece of primitive money It is large cast copper cross, about 7 inches across, that was used in parts of what is now Zaire up to the early 20th century. One would buy about 22 pounds of flour or five or six chickens. Two would buy a gun.

Scottishmoney
I am kind of surprised more of these things did not get melted down by the Belgian colonials when they replaced these with their own coinage. These have a lot of copper.

Scottishmoney
Nice. I can proudly state that I got a bigger piece it is about 21 cm or about 8.25" which was common for the earlier ones, and at less than a third of the price on the pieces on that site
gxseries
Less than 1/3 of the price? O_O But the shipping would have killed!!!

Guest Aidan Work
The coins of Katanga which were issued in 1961 also depict the copper Katanga cross as well. Manilla rings were used in northern Nigeria for the purchase of slaves. They were in use right up to the 1940's. Aidan.
