daggit
Not a great picture, but the lettering is affected, the antlers and most noticeable the bottom of the caribou. Is this due to die deterioration? Anyone?

Metalman
Hey daggit I think the problem is that the pic does not really show to good what your seeing with the coin in your hand ? Maybe you could crop it down to the areas that your asking about ? I can see something at the base of the caribou but its not clear . daggit
how do you do those arrows and circles to show the area in question?
prgrmr
Yes, you are right. The raised parts at the base of the caribou is from the die cracking and chipping away over time. Canadian mintages are so much lower than US, I'm sure they don't use nearly as many dies either. Is there a "P" on the obverse?

I would have to agree with you it does look like it's from a die cracking.
