Steps to authenticate...?

How could a person not familiar with coins, know for certain what they have is what they think and/or not not at all? Lol...i dont know who to ask if a coin seems likely to be worthwhile to send to be authenticated. I have a 36 dot penny and i think it is one, but im far from knowledgeable, as well heard could be a fake or altered...what if it is? But not by whom presently has it? Anyways, is there known people who to seek that could say with knowledge whether it likely is or likely isnt? Canada and/or Provincially known. Thank you for any information to help narrow some assistance by trusted knowledgeable persons.
