2 Reichsmark coins - weird edge - Did I get fake coins?

Recommended Posts

Hello, I recently got 20 silver coins (2 Reichsmark) These: http://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces3416.html

The problem I am facing right now is this.

The edge of the coin should have this text on it: GEMEINNUTZ GEHT VOR EIGENNUTZ

All coins have this text but, on some coins the text is written upwards, towards the backside of the coin and some coins have the text flipped towards the front side of the coin.

Does it mean the coins with flipped text are fake? Image: http://imgur.com/a/H2XrT

Most coins with edge inscriptions have both directions as in your A & B photo. I believe it just depends on the condition of the press when they were struck.

As Art noted, they should be fine - it's pretty common for edge inscriptions to be facing either way. My larger concern from the photo is that the pieces look polished.

The edge inscriptions look absolutely fine to me and I also agree with ccg, unfortunately these coins look as if someone had cleaned them.

Anyway, even though it is not hard to find this type of a coin, getting one that has never been cleaned in at least AU condition is a challenge!
