hung
Hello everyone, I currently own this 1776 coin. Could you help me how to tell if it's real or not, please? Thank you very much.
ccg
It's a counterfeit of a Mexican 8 reales / silver dollar. The details are quite different (crude or cartoonish, one could say), especially on the head side, and the metal also appears to be pewter or another base white metal alloy. Vfox
Rsraghead, have a look at some of the counterfeit 8 Reales online. A few look like this one but many are very difficult to tell. I've been collecting them for years and returned a few because they were very very good counterfeits. That being said, I'm a hobbyist jeweler and I know the methods used very well, most convincing ones are lost wax cast with a good silver alloy. Sadly this method isn't apparent until you have the coin in hand or at least every angled image imaginable.

robtgossard
IF the coin is worth huge (if found legit) and IF you want to sell it off, have the coin assayed by a reputable company. Good luck
