1985 Penny struck on dime planchet Error

Hi Dennis P, welcome to coinpeople.com. Are you able to post a pic of that coin next to a regular penny and dime? I'd love to see the difference. As for the value, I don't know off the top of my head.

Can't tell from your picture of the rim but if it's a dime planchett it will be layered as are all the copper-nickel US coins. There are a large number of cents around that have had the copper layer removed. It's possible that this is what you have.

Still a neat error :)

 

I wouldn't necessarily say that it is an error as it is a simple chemical process performed in schools. See

Ah, I stand corrected. I don't suppose there is a way to tell if it left the mint that way or if it was stripped afterwards?

regardless its a neat penny I will enjoy it for years to come.... however who is going to go through that long process to get a zinc penny lol
