San_Miguel98
The Qaitbay mosque in Cairo was once part of a desert complex completed in 1474 by Sultan Al-Ashraf Qaitbay. It included a vast commercial center for the Syrian and Red Sea trade routes. While not all of the structures have survived to this day, the mosque is the best preserved and is home to the sultan's mausoleum.
San_Miguel98
The Abu Simbel temple was built by Ramses II. Four colossal statues of him sit in pairs flanking the entrance. The head and torso of the statue to the left fell during ancient times, probably as the result of an earthquake. The alignment of the temple is such that twice a year the sun’s rays reach into the innermost sanctuary to illuminate the seated statues of Ptah, Amon-Ra, Ramses II, and Horus.
