This is emergency money from Koblenz.

 

It shows Joseph Görres (1776–1848)

He was born in Koblenz, he was a cirtic

of literature.

 

This piece is made of iron - after WW-I

there was a shortage of coinage and silver.

(the people hoarded silver money)

jeggy was right, is it 1/2 Mark notgeld from Coblenz, Germany, made from iron, 25.6mm, 51.000 ex, shown in Walter Funk's catalogue "Die Notmunzen der deutschen Stadte, Gemeinden, Kreise, Lander, etc, Band 1:Standardkatalog der amtlichen Ausgaben 1916-1921" 7-th edition 2000

at position 80.10B, page 87, value 12 DM (6 euro)

It's amazing that after a lost war, with a ruined economy the German towns emitted these pieces of numismatic art even they know that the value will be almost zero after short time... The paper notgeld are also beautiful in 99%...

I just think it's interesting how well the type and design style (even the portrait) relates to the art movements of that time period. Correct me if I'm wrong but this was around the time of the Bauhaus school and the DADA movement. This just screams type heavy german graphic design. Which is great if you ask me! :ninja:
