I've always liked this coin. But obviously something about it made everyone who ever saw it think "looks fake to me"

I don't see anything that makes me think the coin itself is fake right off. But I might wonder about some of those chop marks being genuine.

Yes, it was. It is known as the fancy 9.

I haven't weighed it. But it did come from a reputable dealer here in the Los Angeles area. I picked it up because of the chopmarks.

If the weight is between 26.86 & 27.26 - then the odds are the coin itself is genuine.

I'm not into varieties for this type coin, but I would consider the coin Mexican and not Spanish It is the 8 Reales that was minted in Mexico City and thus has a slightly lower value than the ones minted in Spain, I believe. But, other than that, there isn't anything I have ccome up with wrong with your coin. Nice catch!
