Pictured above is a Missouri Sales Tax token. From what little information I have been able to find about them, it appears that these were made by various states starting around the time of the Depression when the States enacted sales taxes.
<br><br>
Back in those days, rounding to the nearest cent on a transaction would mean quite a bit more than today. These tokens were, apparently, denominated in mils (1/10 of a cent) and were given out as change by retailers to eliminate this rounding.
