Buy your coins that is. I don't see many coin show reports at all here, so where do you get most of your collection?
Me, I'm fortunate here in Florida, there are many shows, in fact a monthly show is 30 minutes from my house. I wish I can go monthly, but lately iI can only make it quarterly and I'm jonesin for a coin fixx. Thankfully a show is this Sunday, and i hope to add to the collection.
How about everyone else?

I have been collecting long enough that I have a nation-wide supply chain of trusted dealers. They let me know when they have something I might be interested in.
As referenced in my thread on my latest buys I also buy at many auctions...Stack's, ANR, and Heritage to name a few. At live auctions, however, one is best served by either attending himself (if possible) or by retaining an agent to represent him rather than depending on internet or mail bids based on a picture. Believe me, one mistaken bid on a deceptive pic will more than pay for a 5 to 7% agent representation fee. I say this from experience...

About 10 minutes as the crow flies, 20 or so driving. I've been so tempted to check out the beaches, esp after a major storm, but usually there are about a billion people ahead of me. And I aint kidding, after hurricane Francis we went to my mother in law who lives on the beach and saw at least 20 people with detectors that morning, I kid you not. And I've heard some stories of some big $$$$ finds.
Oh, and no decent coin shops in the area.

In no particular order, except Kens where I get about 70% of my collection. I get about everything there at the Greysheet bid, if not better.

I go to three or four shows a year in San Jose, Santa Clara, and San Francisco. The first two have full range of US and world material, the last focused on ancients. My collecting topics are generally not met by a local store. I get catalogs from Tom Cederlind, Pegasi, Spartan, Freeman and Sear, Harlan Berk, and Jean Elsen. In addition, I bid in cgb auctions and buy from their internet lists. Lastly, VCoins for window shopping and the occasional purchase. Tokens and medals are bought off Ebay between shows.
I'm thinking of a trip to Denver in August and that will exhaust my budget for the year!
Local. I don't usually go hunting, I prefer to just wait for the right piece at a reasonable price to come along.

I used to buy coins from shops, trusted dealers (either by internet or by post) or from the occasional coin show. That was about it.

Mostly local businesses where I can view the coin I am interested in, and via the Internet from dealers who I know (or trust based on recommendations from people I know

). Newly issued coins I also buy from the local Bundesbank branch, kind of like Trantor_3's post office, and sometimes directly from mints/numismatic offices.

we don't have a lot *in* san francisco ... maybe one coin show each year. i found a coin shop in the mission where the proprietor keeps the shop gated and locked up (he has to buzz you in) and the guy was a total crab.
so ... i buy from dealers i've worked with in the past, here on cp, and on ebay ...

I used to go to the invitation only Ancient and Medieval Shows that they had there in the early 1990's. Cannot say that I ever visited a coin dealer there, other than one time seeing coins for sale in a Woolworths near Market St.

I guess it depends on what I am looking for. Usually for my Saints, there are a few national dealers that I've dealt with in the past that have the depth of inventory I need, in addition I will usually at least peruse the Heritage catalogs (and sometimes even bid successfully). For type coins it's more opportunistic, as I've bought coins at major auctions, national shows, eBay, tradingslabs.com and even raw from a local show! Everything else I consider just fun stuff, like my latest fascination with Mexican silver, there I buy them mostly at the monthly local shows and eBay. Also, another source of fun purchases is my local coin club, as there is always someone selling something in addition to the auctions. But all those buys are just total impulse, no plan involved, no list, just a call of the wild.

In this order:
1) National auctions i.e. Heritage / ANR / Bowers.
2) Selected dealers i.e. JB Hamrick, Northern Nevada Coin, Butternut to name a few.
3) Get a few coins from places like eBay and CoinPeople.
Unfortunately, there are no good dealers or shops in NYC (that I know of) anymore.

- Local dealers
- Weekly Lisbon fair
- Browsing a handful dealer's websites
- Coin swaps with friends met on the WWW (very active until a couple of years ago)
- Ebay (plus other auction sites - mainly Portuguese)
- Numisma and ANP auctions
- Numismatic forums (Coinpeople, etc.)
..i think that covers it...

I get my american coins only on Coinpeople... it's great to talk with "foreign collectors" about german coins (Jeff

) The motto of Coinpeople is great and it discribes my opinion very good... Come for the coins, Stay for the people...

I have reduced the number of coins I purchase quite drastically this past year or so. In order of quantity purchased:
1. Local coin show
2. Local coin club meetings
3. Collector/sellers from CoinPeople and another forum
4. Local coin shop
I used to be on e-bilge all the time, but I will never purchase anything from that place again. I have tried (and failed miserably!) to successfully bid on some very nice coins on Heritage and a couple of other auction company sites. I think these places will be my best bets to get quality coins in the future. I just have to learn the "game" first

I usually save up for bigger coin shows. I will also buy some from the smaller ones. After that it is CPeeps, a couple of online sites and the very occasional Ebay buy. I have a couple of local shops but one is never open at good times (I have bought from him at shows) and the other doesn't typically stock a lot of stuff that I buy. It is good for SAE's and the occasional impulse purchase, though.

My collection is small and fairly worthless by most standards, but I've picked em up from auctions, I've got em from circulation, I'm getting an decent mess of circulated and folded star notes, and I've bought some small lots of ebay. THat's how i got my mess of foreign coins.
I don't have any shows near me that i know of, there is a shop about fifty miles away, but it doesn't keep it's hours at all so I don't make a dedicated trip there anymore. Just when I'm already in town.
Antique shops are fun too.
