Latvia has issued a new coin that commemorates the 1991 barricades 15 years ago. In 1990 the country declared, or rather restored, its independence. But it took more than a year until the USSR acknowledged the sovereignty of the three Baltic republics. Here http://www.barikades.lv/en/3_2.php is some info about what happened in those months.
The obverse of the coin shows some stylized bonfire flames. On the reverse you see Lacplesis (a mythological hero) in front of barricades.
It's an interesting design. I especially like the reverse with the blocks making up the image.

I'm not sure the obverse works for me. I guess I need to see one in hand. I agree about the reverse. The design constructed around the blocks is visually interesting and conveys the theme of the barricades. Wonderful image.

I like that, and I wish we'd done designs like this for the state quarters. It's new, topical, and interesting. Even if the design doesn't work at least it is not boring.
