Well, I was bidding on a few lots in the Heritage Long Beach sale, and I still had high bid on one lot, so now I am watching them live on their site. It's not as exciting as being there, but it's still pretty cool. Only 300 lots to go before mine comes up!

Yes, I won a 1908-D WM, missed out on the 1926-S. That's a better date, but they went very strong, not only full ask, but full CW Trends! I just couldn't see paying full retail for a coin that is only the second most common of the heavily melted branch mint Saints of the 20s (the 22-S is the only one more common, and I bought an MS-62 in 2004 for under $2K, but these were lower grade and a lot more money! The one that didn't sell is available for $3K, but that seems like too strong for an MS-61.

For the most part it seems the more common of the rare (if that makes sense) seem to be a little overpriced in todays market. When compared to earlier rare gold issues the prices are rather close on some things. Personally I would rather pay 6-8k for a heraldic eagle 1801 ish than a better date saint, but then again, I'm not collecting the entire saint set. biggrin.gif I guess it all comes down to the popularity of the series over the rarity of the specific coin sometimes.

Well, I checked this morning, less than 12 hours after the auction closed and the MS-61 is already sold! They still have an MS-64 asking $9,700 and CW Trends is only $8,500! At least the coin I bought was a couple hundred bucks below trends, of course it's far more common too.

It's still a lot better coin that all the common dates you see on eBay, so you still made out better than most if you're still below trend.
