Lordi commemorative

This news was made public the same day that our former Prime Minister Paavo Lipponen struck the new 2006 Parliament Reform commemorative. Even Lipponen commented that he thought it was a good idea. Not sure what it will look like, but I must say that I am a bit curious.

Although Finland broke with convention in sending Lordi to the ESC, somehow I doubt that convention will be broke in this instance and have Lordi appear on the €2 to circulate throughout Europe?

In this case does struck mean he actually operated the press and made a coin or that he vetoed the bill that would have authorized the coin?

Maybe the band members without masks?

As for the coin ... well, the article says that a collector coin is to be minted. Strictly speaking, that means it will not be a €2 commemorative piece. On the other hand, the Eurovision Song Contest is actually an event of pan-European relevance so to say. (I just would not want to see ESC coins issued every year from now on ...)

The first one. Occasionally, when applicable, a person somehow connected with the event/person being commemorated "strikes" the first coin.

Please let us not go down that road. A tabloid did that here the past week and it raised such an instant hullaballoo. A petition began circulating on the internet to boycott the magazine. And after a few corporations cancelled their advertsing contracts with the magazine, it began to see the money flowing away and now has started a public apology ad campaign. This from a gossip tabloid.

Don't forget it is the Finance Ministry who makes the official request for such coins. So there are at least 2 people to blame.





OK, maybe there is a good reason to hope that Räikkönen does not win this season.

The impression that I got from the article was that a legal tender Lordi coin is not necessarily the manner in which a tribute will be made to their victory. I think it is possible that Moneta may just issue a medal or some other exonumia rather than a collector or commemorative coin. It remains to be seen.

As for Merkel's appearance in the article; during the press conference when Lipponen presented the coin, he made reference to the Finnish markka, saying that it was an older currency unit than the German mark (playing of course on the different incarnations of the German mark). And he smugly joked that he has said the same comment to Chancellor Merkel.

On one hand I hope that your impression is wrong - a "Lordi" coin would be a fun idea. Then again, the idea could be "copied" by other countries, and we would in the worst case end up with Eurovision Song Contest commems every single year. Brrrr.

Seems that Lordi is out of the commem race. Today I read that there may be a €2 coin, some time in fall, commemorating the 90th anniversary of Finland's independence instead ...

I wonder what design will be on the Finnish Independence 2 Euro coin.As for the idea of having Lordi on a coin,that would be a dumb idea,as I remember the controversy very well.Lordi were the subject of calls for their expulsion from the Eurovision Song Contest,as it was alleged that the lyrics contained references to the Devil & to the Lake of Fire in Hell.

Oh well, "it was alleged" ... I would not take that too serious. (The entire contest should not be taken too serious anyway, hehe.) By the way, we had a long thread, or even more than one , about Lordi, the winning song, and the ESC in another CoinPeople forum. As for the 2007 €2 independence commem, well, "90 years" is a little odd in my opinion, but it still is a better idea for such a coin than Lordi or the ESC. From what I have read, there will be a BU set (20,000 or so) with a Song Contest theme.

The hullaballoo about Lordi being demonic is as old as the evil Elvis pelvis. It is rock music, and it is a show nothing much more than that. So yes, such things should not be taken too seriously.


Anyhow, I am not too surprised about abandoning the Lordi commem. I think it was just excited talk at the time anyhow. As for the "90 years" being a little odd, well perhaps for other countries yes. However, if you are familiar with prior Finnish commemoratives, Finnish independence has been a common theme. A commemorative has been issued for the 50th, 60th, 75th, and 80th years of independence.

Seems I am not quite that familiar with prior commems. And I even have two of those four ...

Heehee ... As far as I know, the source was some info that the Finnish Mint provided at this year's World Money Fair. Don't know whether that was official or "semi-official", though.

It will not be a real coin, not even a token within the mint set. Lordi will be seen on the packaging but that is about it.

This year the Finnish Mint will apparently issue two collector coins on that occasion (a bimetallic €5 piece, and a gold coin), but no €2 commemorative coin ...

Apparently that is the case. The denomination of the gold piece will be €100.
