They have some very nice designs. So we now have an up-to-date online catalog.

The "Dresden" coin will come a little later, by the way. After a couple of months without any new issues that piece will be issued on 24 August. Then, only a few weeks later, the fifth and last €10 piece comes out (the "Hanse" coin, in September). Now why they do it that way ... no idea.

WOW, some nice designs. Are they expensive? I have no knowledge on German coins.

The regular version can be "bought" at face value, ie. you go to a Bundesbank branch office (or a commercial bank that has them), pay €10 and get a €10 piece. If you want the prooflike version, you buy it from the German Numismatic Office (€15) or a dealer ...

I have ALL the German silver $10 commoratives from 2002 to the first one of this year. Outstanding set of silvers and do hope that my connection in Europe will keep coming through for me! My concern is the rising cost of silver will finally push the uncirculated coins past the $10 euro level and we will have to start paying a premium for them. And, I might add I already have to pay the difference in the exchange rate but I am not complaining as you CAN NOT buy silver coins in the U.S. for $6.20 ($5 euro silver) or around $13.00 ($10 euro silver). Some of the EU nations have nothing less than OUTSTANDING buys on their commemorative silvers in uncirculated condition and as long as I can get them for myself and other U.S. collectors (friends) I will continue to do so!!! The Euro opened my eyes to world collecting and I have nothing but fun ever since!!!

I have a few of those. And I'm sure there will follow more.

May well happen one day; after all, that is how the German gold coins are sold. Those half ounce pieces have a face value of €100 but that is rather symbolic. The issue price is basically the gold price on the legal date of issue, plus a €25 "supplement", plus s/h, if one buys from the Numismatic Office.

As for silver coins, the German governments have in the past followed a different "strategy". They are always issued at face value - but when the silver price went up in late 1979, the 5 DM coins were made of Magnimat (CuNi "sandwich") instead of silver (Ag 625). Now collectors did not really like that, so as from 1987 the collector coins were silver pieces again, but with a face value of 10 DM (that so far had been used for the 1972 Olympics pieces only). In 1998 the silver content was raised (from .625 to .925).

The German €10 coins are all Ag 925 pieces too. The silver content of the mark and euro commems (fine weight) went from 7.0g (5 DM) to ~9.7g (early 10 DM) to ~14.3g (late 10 DM) and is now ~16.6g (€10 which is ~ DM 19.56). If the silver price continues to increase, one option for the issuing government is to have collector coins made with a face value of, say, 20 euro. That would be in line with what they did before.

Another one is to make the prooflike pieces (which are a little more expensive anyway) from silver just as now, but issue the "regular" version with a lower silver content. That is what Portugal does. Theoretically one could even make a CuNi version for the mass market and a silver prooflike version. But that solution would probably not be appreciated by many collectors. After all, such "non-regular" coins do not really circulate anyway - which is especially true in Euroland where the silver and gold coins are "legal tender" in the issuing member state (i.e. in a relatively small part of the currency union) only.
