I have no interest in purchasing any but would like to know what is with coins advertised as gold plated. I often see them advertised and seldom bid on. Is this done by the mints themselves or by another source that hopes to sell them easier by plating them? As you can see I have no idea. Does it add to the value? Take away from the value? confused1.gif

Almost always post-mint. Usually done to sell otherwise low value coins for a much higher price. IMO it adds a little value to low-value coins, but for a "good" coin, it would be like damage.

My personal opinion, takes away value. Still worth that quarter or whatever but thats it.

I got a couple of gold plated cents. . . . Actually pulled them from Circulation.

I've heard that you can plate up to 100,000 coins with 1oz of gold.... so the gold on a gold plated coin is worth a little less than $.01. So it might push the value of a quarter to .26.
