I am not up on Australian coins, but it looks more like damage after minting. Wait for others to post on it though.

i don't beleive it is an error... it could be counting wheel damage..

If you look at Area A the "bites" are deeper than at Area B. Then Area C appears to be even shallower yet. I think that something tried to get a grip of the coin with multiple teeth and did not have a good grip at Area B and the teeth let loose and bit into the coin a second but brief time at Area C before it was let go by whatever was pushing it into the teeth.

I have no idea what kind of machine would make these marks or why it was grabbing into a coin but that is what it look like to me.

it's a weird one.....but not an error.

Is it possible that this was done in an attempt to encase the coin? Perhaps in a pendant, charm or other type of jewelery. Maybe even an aborted attempt at doing so.

That is an interesting notion but the reverse of the coin is really flattened... I will search further.

Thanks BiggAndyy I appreciate it.

I wonder if it could have been someone trying to make a 2 headed coin...
