I have a question that maybe one of you in the group can answer me.
How does one go about buying a $500 box of the state quarters? Where
do you get them? How much do they cost, I mean I know there is $500
dollars in there, but is there a premium to the box? I can't seem to
get enough at my local banks and I don't want to have to pay E-Bay or
the US Mint prices if I don't have to. I usually get them at the bank
for face value and go through them and get what I need that way, but I
usually need more than what they can provide. Any help would be greaty
appreciated.

There are a few things you can do. You can try a different bank in your area. If you live near a major city in the US, go to the largest bank in the city. Or you can order 2- 1,000 coin bags from the mint

Do you have any friends in retail? They can sometimes get the new quarters by the box from the armored car companies that supply their change.

Talk to the person that orders the coins at your bank. See if they will order you an extra box. I've had good luck doing this once you get to know the personal at your bank.

That is my problem, I've tried the banks in my area. They only get one box of quarters in and they are like GOLD here. IF you get lucky, you may get a roll, and if your really lucky and you hit them when the box just come in, you might get two rolls, but that is it. I like to breaking them open and going through them and the few rolls that I get just dont cut it. As for someone in retail, I'm not that lucky, I wish that I new someone that I could get them from on a continous basis. I could get them from the mint, but I don't want to have to pay that premium for the same quarters that I can get out of the bank. If I was collecting them to keep then that would be different. I figure I see people with these boxes on ebay all the time, so I figure how hard could it be to get one. Well it's turning out not to be that easy so far....

You may wish asking your bank nicely, and offering to pay all their freight/postage costs involved in getting the coins. (should be less than getting them directly from the mint+markup) That may work.

Your branch manager should have no problem buying you as many new quarters as you like from the carriers, but you may have to promise him that you aren't going to dump the leftovers on his branch.

The trouble I see is that you may get a box of a state you didn't want. Dan is the one to ask, though. He works for a commercial bank, I think.

I would not pay anything other then face fo them....like others have said try your bank

I've tried, and it not even the branch. I've tried different branches, I get the same answer every were I go. I've even tried changing banks. I have two different checking accounts. One for my everyday bills and one for my Paypal accound. I went and tried both of them and basically got the same story. They only get one box in if that. Alot of times they don't even get the one box in. I emailed the main branch at one of the banks to see if they could order one for me. This is the answer that I got from them. I have received your request to buy a $500.00 box of new state quarters. Please contact your local Federal Reserve Office regarding this request. I can't believe this, well yes I can, It's the pass the buck game. You go here and there and back here and you get no where. I didn't find a site on the web and I sent an e-mail, but I didn't hear anything back yet. I not so sure that I'm going to either though. There is got to be a easier way!!!!!!!!!!!!! Come on, doesn't some one here buy any that knows.

Honestly I don't buy them... what the heck are you gonna do with $500 in quarters anyway?? I can think of a few better ways to spend $500

If you really want to know what I do with them I'll tell you. I collect them. I have a registry set at PCGS of MS statehood quarters that I'm currently tied for #16 and I'm under D.L. Peer Collection. This is what I do in a nutshell. I goto the bank and get the quarters and bring home what ever I can. I open up the rolls and go through the rolls and pick out the really good ones and I then send them in to PCGS for grading. See I want a $500.00 dollar box because it isn't really going to cost me $500.00 dollars. If I'm really lucky, I might use $2.00 or $3.00 out of that whole box of quarters. I then turn them back in and get my money back and start over ( of course I have to put my $2 dollars back in ). So you see It doesn't cost me anything except the money upfront,( and don't forget the grading fee's ) after I'm done going through them ( which is about a week or so ) You just have to have a good eye for grading. I need material to look at. the few rolls that I get don't produce enough good ones to send in. So that is why I'm looking to get a $500.00 box. The more material you have to look at the better chances you have to coming across some good coins.

I think the main problem is that the bank doesn't see why it should bother with your request - it costs them time and money, with no appearent benefit.
