I was buying silver rounds, just mixed stuff, from a gal who had an antique shop, she only charged a few percent over spot and was pretty reasonable.

Then she married a Doctor and shut down her store. Congratulations to her, boo hoo for me.

I've seen places that sell gold coins and silver arounds, but I can't see spending $12 to $13 bucks for a silver eagle when gold is sitting at around 10. Maybe that's normal and I have unreasonable expectations.

I've looked on ebay and most of the stuff that is reasonable priced has a high shipping price. I buy the rounds off an on, whenever I have a little spare cash and opportunity I don't buy in large quantities, is there anywhere that has reasonable prices on small amounts of silver and gold?

Unless you have a local deal, like your antique store friend, shipping is going to be part of the equation. Sometime the way to minimize the expense is to save the cash and purchase at a "local" show. No shipping charges and the prices are usually very competitive.

You may also want to consider saving the funds until you have enough and purchasing silver eagles by the roll. Usually you pay the smallest premium over spot with fairly large quantites. SO the more you buy the lower the price. Buy them locally and have a double savings of ot S&H.

Good luck and enjoy it whatever you decide to do.

I almost forgot one of the truly great sources of silver buillion. Local coin club auctions. I've seen Morgans and Peace Dollars and halves selling at melt or even below. A double whammy. Nice coins and investment silver all at once.

Like Art said, coin shows are great for bullion.

Can't beat $11.50 for a ASE. Slightly above melt and no shipping charges! 1oz generic rounds normally average $11. Some old stock they let go for $10-$10.50.

That is about the right premium for an SAE at today's spot silver price. The cheapest silver you can probably buy is generic rounds or bars. But, they have not much extra numismatic value (in teh secondary market, anyway). And, SAE's generally seem to go up a little bit over time just based upon that.

No matter what, you are probably better off getting your bullion locally if possible as shipping is a factor as Art alluded to.

Yep. Just try to buy in bulk if buying locally is not an option. Gov't 1 oz. coins usually carry a premium, just stick with rounds if you're just looking for bullion.

My local supply is out of business now.

THere's a shop a town over I'm gonna check but does anyone have a good on line source?

DId you see that thing with the patriot act where coin dealrs have to register their bullion sales?

Buying eagles by the roll is usually the best way to go if you want eagles, I have a 2006 roll waiting at the post office right now that I paid $221 for (or maybe it was $226, I can't remember). The best places for silver bullion by far in recent times has been my local coin club meetings. Last month I bought a bunch of silver dollars right around melt ($7 each) and last night at our monthly meeting, the same small dealer had probably 30 or so 1982 Mexican onzas that he was selling for $10.25 each. I would have bought a lot of them, but I didn't have the cash with me, plus I just bought enough silver here in the last couple months (though I did pick up a 1988 onza since it was a date I didn't have, only cost me $10). If you don't have a local coin club, then local shows might be your best opportunity. In any event, I would look into the Mexican onzas as they are 1-ounce pure silver with a really pretty design, and the common ones from 1982 and 1983 are often available at just pennies over melt. Good luck!

I have to agree with Art too, the last silver Maple coin I bought at my coin club ran me $10 (Canadian) last week. Nicely below spot.
