He wouldn't have snapped if they hadn't forced him to ebcome emperor. He would've been happy to just be a priest.

According to Gibbon's Decline and fall of The Roman Empire his grandmother Maesa's gold was the determining card in his becoming emperor through swaying the favour and choice of the military. He might well have been happy to settle for being a high priest of the Sun. He fell for the old witches machinations in any event.
