I'd be hesitant to even call that a MS63, let alone 65

Yes...I thought it looked a little beat up too but fortunately for me when I buy toners....I don't care about the grades as I am buying the color. Another bad scan netted me this color for a lot less than I should have paid

You never heard of a cleft chin???
LOL
bY the way I was joking about the Ebay $40 bucks down the drain...it's hard to find Kennedy halves with nice toning and they usually bring over $100 bucks so it was a good deal. Also keep in mind that the image is like 10 times what the coin would look like in hand so while a 65 is questionable......I think it's still a 64 all day long.

Not a bad coin grade wise and awesome toning wise!

I've been hunting ebay every now and then for toned coins,, think I saw this one but the price made my eyes cross. Beautiful coin, but too much premium for the color in my book.
Without tone - ~$10-15
With tone - $100+.... ?... is it just me ?
kryptonitecomics
Feb 22 2006, 02:03 AM
Actually $100 is conservative for a coin with the right color........you may not agree with the premiums being payed for toned coins but people will pay for originality and pay even more for originality with eye appeal.
Stack up a hundred of your favorite coins in PCGS holder....now throw in one with some nice rainbow toning and see which coin get's picked up first?
Bottom line is that unless you are independently wealthy.....it's going to be tough to set your collection apart from everyone elses but buying attractively toned coins allows a collector to own truly unique examples that all look one of a kind.

I must be weird because I don't like toned coins all that much.

Feb 22 2006, 03:51 AM
It doesn't make you weird......if we all liked the same things then it would be one boring collecting world.
I think the longer you collect coins and the more you focus on Pre-1900 coinage.....the more folks begin to appreciate toning. Toning denotes originality much in the same way that a nice patina developes on old furniture and brone statues. Remove the patina and or toning and you deminish an items value.
For those that love blast white coins from prior to 1900.....please do some research on the process of dipping coins becuase usually that's what happened to these coins. It's not natural for a coin to remain blast white several hundred years after it was minted......silver reacts quickly with the environment and it was and still is very common practice to dip coins to remove toning.
So if you like white coins.....great enjoy...nothing wrong with that

Interesting. What is a 65 supposed to look like? While the fields are clean, I felt that Kennedy and he eagle had both substained enoungh hits to make it a marginal 63.

I think in hand you might see it differently. You aren't going to be able to see every mark on the coin in hand that is visable in my super sized image. So if I am a grader in hand....I personally feel it's a 64 coin and no higher. I think that's the biggest problem with folks trying to grade from oversized scans........everything lokks huge

Coin appears to have been exposed to some type of very corrosive gaseous or otherwise aerosolyzed contaminant which may ultimately result in overall damage to the patina.

What's a milk jug pic?
Tiffibunny
Mar 5 2006, 03:14 AM
Cut the bottom off a gallon milk jug, put it over the coin and you take a pic through the top hole. It makes the coin white and a lot of people use it to take nice pics, but it also hides scratches, cleaning, etc.
Ouch. I never understood why some people use harsh steel-wool cleaning. Yeah, it's shiny, but it's so scratched?!

I don't know why you'd try to hide it on a coin like this. It's pretty much a bullion piece either way.

There are so many tricks to photos that people can use to mislead either intentionally or unintentionally. Another one is the extreme angle shot. You can often tilt a coin a big amoount when taking a picture and suddenly the surfaces look smooth as a baby's bottom.
I have tried the milk jug method before to try and get rid of hotspots from lighting. It diffuses the light which helps to eliminate them. But, my coins always ended up looking rahter un-natural when I tried it. Now, I use the patented Tiffibunny lights to light my photos.

Some people also use the milk jug thing to bring out color in their coins.

To be honest, I didn't like toning either when i first started collecting coins (in January

While I can't say with 100% certainty that this did not occur......I think that the chance of this are remote at best as the color and patterns on this coin are very typical with Album toned coins. I would also imagine that if this coin is left in the slab for say 10-20 years.....it won't look any different than it does today....meaning stable surfaces with no added contaminates......
but.......there is no way to be 100% sure since I was not there to see the original storage conditions
