I guess this is a post where I show the new purchases that I bought this year. The reason why I put in bad taste is that I am fully intending to purchase problematic coins, but doesn't make that affordable? tongue.gif

Nevertheless, picture time! evilbanana.gif

Russia 1826 2k with totally wrong mintmark and mintmaster:

Feel free to ask any questions if you wish to comment on any coins in omnicoin that I have. smile.gif

As dirty as that 2 Kopek looks, I like it!
SlavicScott
I, too, like the 2k. But I must ask, why is the mintmark and mintmaster wrong?? Is it a poorly executed forgery?

I am honestly confused as well. This is my first time coming across totally messed up legend and such errors should have stopped by the end of late 18th century.

I have placed a discussion about this in here: Link

The usual mintmark should be like this:

which is EM-ИК. What I have seems to suggest that it is EH-NK, which does not exist in any catalogue book!

On other hand, if this is a counterfeit coin, it might explain everything smile.gif
gxseries
Just got myself a few world coins and updated my crappy photos for some of the coins.

And a mysterious Bukhara coin:

As well as, I have opened another account in omnicoin. This is an account that I am planning to sell coins or post what coins I have sold - I can't help buying and actually end up regretting buying them as they aren't related to what I am collecting hysterical.gif Actually, the coin store here ran out of decent Russian coins for me to hoard, and hence that. sad.gif But, that means more excellent world coins for the rest of the forum members here yes.gif

Here is the url to my other account: http://www.omnicoin.com/user_view.aspx?id=gxclone
Burks
I like the second coin you posted. Reverse is interesting.
gxseries
One filler in my collection that came in today:

user posted image

That coin came together with this, but I realized I have a spare and will offer it to anyone here. I can't just hoard everything sad.gif

user posted image

I cannot be bothered with the poor grades these days... rofl1.gif

As well as added some notes in banknotebank, although I got plenty more to add... I just need to research about the years since quite a fair bit of notes aren't printed with the issue years on them. mad.gif
gxseries
A bunch of coins that I bought today from a major coin fair here that helds twice a year.

Story here: http://www.coinpeople.com/A-coin-fair-here...alia-t8631.html

Lot1 front
Lot1 back

Lot2 front
Lot2 back

I am probably going to sell almost the whole lot back since they were quite cheap and thought I could pass the savings to you all here. The ones that I am going to keep are probably the Russians, Polish and the 1819 German coin. I might consider a few others but you can start offering me via pm if there is a coin that you really want smile.gif
daggit
Nice grab, Mike would probaly be interested in the the Japanese. biggrin.gif
gxseries
Yup, Mike's definately got all the Japanese coins - I promised him that I'll hunt down all the good Japanese coins deal.

Here's something I got this week:

user posted image

Sadagura 1773 2 para - 3 kopeks for Wallachia and Moldava. I find this particular coin hilarious related to it's history of dual denomination, as well as, who would in the right mind mint coins out of captured Turkish cannon metal. The edging of this copper coin is supposed to be QUITE pretty but it looks like I'll need to go after a VF or XF for that to be visible, which can go way too pricy.

I've uploaded the other coins that I got in the fair in omnicoin, as well as the other Soviet commemorative rubles that I got. I still have another odd 100+ Russian coins that are not photographed but that will have to come a few months later as I have them locked up very very far away... Until then, perhaps you don't need to waste any more drops of saliva on your keyboard. smile.gif
gxseries
A coin that I got in the mail this week from CIVITAS Galleries, a great dealer that I got to know on CU. His homepage can be found at here: http://www.civitasgalleries.com/ bthumbsup.gif

While this particular coin is damaged, hinged, gilted etc, this is still a fairly difficult coin to find at a good price:

What is more interesting is with the edge inscription of this particular coin which could be found in this new topic that I just typed out:

A bunch of Russian coins, with some red kopeks there. What is more important are the corroded copper kopeks at the bottom of the picture. One of them seems to be an overstruck 1728 Moscow kopeck!!! shok.gif

More pictures and details to come when I get the time to do it smile.gif
Tiffibunny
Ooh! I'm liking the looks of those red ones. yes.gif
gxseries
Nothing particularly rare or so, but here is what I got some time ago - I got more to photograph but haven't be satisified with what I have been taking sad.gif

More Russian coin lots

What is interesting is the denga coin and the 50 ruble coins - which I will illustrate in the Russian coin forum. And yes, this is my devil plan to get people to the specialized area diablo.gif

As well as, I uploaded a few more Australian commemorative coins in circulation.

That looks pretty unusual smile.gif
gxseries
Came back from a fair and bought these coins:

http://www.coinpeople.com/index.php?showto...=0&#entry241371 Warning: pictures are fairly large!

Still amazing how many more Russian coins I can buy grin.gif

If you noticed, there is a Macau coin there. If you actually write my name out in traditional Chinese, that's how it is written! ohmy.gif

user posted image

Now there are actually TWO serious error coins there - I'll let you figure what they are before I post the answers in the Russian coin forum biggrin.gif

gxseries
Not a lot of purchases, but here are MORE Russian coins.

Russia 1788 MM 5 kopeks over 1762 10 kopeks.

These are getting amazingly difficult to find.

Another is a possibly specimen set from the Soviet Union:

And lastly, is a gift from Kuhli, (many thanks!)
Russia 1980 20 kopeks, DIE CLASH!

gxseries, I've been admiring your collection over on the OmniCoin site. I noticed your 1720-OK rouble, the one with the edge dated 1719. Did you know that another example with the wrong edge was auctioned in Dmitry Markov's N.Y. Sale last January? It might be in slightly better shape than yours, but it sold for $1,400! yes.gif

I SERIOUSLY thought you were joking about the 4 digits figure!!! shok.gif Auction XII, Lot 1100? No way! swoon.gif

But, there are some skeptisms with some dealers that I have shown here. Some say it's counterfeit, some says it's a genuine, so I have no idea what it is at the moment. I'll open a thread in the Russian coin forum.
gxseries
Got myself two sets of this Korean set:

(Sorry - the scanner isn't too nice on me.) Nevertheless, Korean mintsets are QUITE scarce - try to find one on ebay and you will pay a heavy price for it.

All coins except the 1 and 5 won coins are minted in 1996 and the other two are 1983, since there aren't any minted since 1992. This is an official mintset by Hwadong, an official distributor of South Korean coins.

The first Koreans have very spartan designs. They must have all of their mottos contained well in those characters.

Another Korean coin, but this time it might be a uniface error coin,

Super Junk lot of Japanese coins:

Nice loot. Did you find any gems in there? Did you buy them directly from Japan?
gxseries
Yes Akdrv I did. There have been some very interesting coins including a prooflike coin that I am discussing in world coin forum. I shall post more coins later when the giveaway is over smile.gif
gxseries
Got two Chinese Soviet coins.

Chinese Soviet Republic 1931-1934, or better known as JiangXi Soviet. Probably minted in 1932 although I am not too sure if both are genuine.

Red coins from red China.
gxseries
Some crazy Russian coins this week or for the past few days:

IPB Image

And that is only three lots.

Guess what was the major lot? It was the lot with the silver Tsar kopeks and the Soviet coins. Total of over 2.5oz silver coins which I didn't expect! shok.gif Ironically, that cost about the same as the 1757 overstriked kopek! shok.gif BUT! What is more important is what was inside the silver kopeks - some highlights are 1848, 1859, 1871 10k, 1865, 1873, and a toned UNC 1899 20 kopek! shok.gif

The 1757 overstriked 1 kopek on Swedish coin is on discussion here: http://www.coinpeople.com/index.php?showto...mp;#entry267915 Fortunately I didn't pay THAT much in what the discussion is on.

There are some stunning UNC Soviet kopeks too which I will have to individually photograph. And lastly, a Moldavian-Wallachia 2para-3kopecks worned year but the edge is pretty nice.
gxseries
Another interesting coin:

IPB Image

Double strike ancient Japanese coin? Not something I really know of.

Of course I have no good knowledge but based on the pic, the coin may have been sitting in a pile with other coins of other sizes. Maybe the oxidation of one smaller coin contaminated yours because they were on top of each other in a pile for years.

Know what I mean? I'm really tired.
gxseries
This is an UNC coin from Japan, minted in 1935 which came from a lot.

IPB Image

I still have plenty to photograph sad.gif

gxseries
A Soviet 5 kopek coin, likely to be a trial piece:

IPB Image
Burks
That 1935 Japanese coin is quite the eye catcher.
gxseries
Holed and awfully worned coins but I didn't care - they cost just 1 dollar each! (I'm NOT joking)

IPB Image

IPB Image

The 1/4 ruble of Pavel I is notoriously difficult to get hold of and fortunately, that seemed to be the only coin that has date on it and it's a 1798! biggrin.gif
elverno
Way to go! I'll double your money on that 1798... wink.gif

bthumbsup.gif
gxseries
A shocker lot has just come in.

Firstly it is this 1811 2 kopek coin.

IPB Image

This coin is getting quite difficult to find in XF, forget UNC. The original brown patina and no verdigris makes this coin quite desirable. Not to forget to mention of the doubling at the reverse which makes it interesting. As well as, the edge is not the typical smooth edge but a reeded edge!!! shok.gif

IPB Image

Next is a batch of Soviet coins. Yes Soviet coins, but what?

Look carefully:

IPB Image

And look at this image as a comparsion:

IPB Image

The coin on the right is a sample from the rest of the coin. I believe they are all PROOF coins! shok.gif !!!!!!

As well as, I'm still sorting out the lot from this picture:

IPB Image

So stay tune to the pictures! smile.gif

Good finds, gxseries! bthumbsup.gif That 2 kopeiki coin is beautiful. I am seeing "ИМ" instead of "НМ" mintmaster initials ... but I assume that "НМ" is correct, and the lighting in the picture is playing tricks?

Glancing through my Brekke reference for this type, it seems like this edge (listed as edge No. 1) was more usual for coins of this denomination from 1801 up until 1810; afterwards, about half of the varieties for 1810 and 1811 have the plain edge and the others edge No. 1. After that, all have a plain edge. I wonder why the transition was made?

The Soviet era coins are very nice ... probably very difficult to find in such good condition after 30+ years.
gxseries
Bobh, you can say my photography skills are terrible and my photography shows no justice. But as well as, since the picture size is limited, it unfortunately shows less details. Here is a larger one:

IPB Image

Uzedenikov has marked it as scarce and I don't think I have seen many of such examples around. Actually this is my first to handle such example. Even so, I believe such grades are getting quite difficult to find.

This coin is one of the coins inside the lot,

IPB Image

UNC!!! Toned but I'm happy. I got more to photograph but I'll show the highlight of what was in there. Believe it or not, for the silver coins, I paid slightly over twice the bullion value! And I believe I have a 1840 10 kopek coin which is probably UNC!!! shok.gif That kind of pays off everything that I paid for!

I forgot to show some more coins that I got that is not in the lot. This is another one of them,

IPB Image

You can see a fair amount of coins uploaded on omnicoin if you can't wait tongue.gif

Scrottishmoney, I believe it's doubled. You can see the crown and the ball doubled. Nevertheless, it's pretty interesting.

A 1854 ruble in XF ish that I got recently from a coin fair here. Nothing unusual except for a seller that had a batch of silver rubles from one collection. He had a XF Peter I ruble as well as a XF+ Anna ruble!!! shok.gif Too bad I don't even have enough money of what the seller is asking but it's still a bargain.

For now,

IPB Image

Got it much cheaper than what I see on ebay these days.
gxseries
I seriously thought it was a joke when I bid on this:

Japan 2003 1000 yen, commemorating the 5th Winter Asian Games in Aomori

IPB Image

IPB Image

IPB Image

Totally shocked when I saw it.

This is the first colorized coin minted in Japan released back in 2003. A mintage of 50,000 and in one full ounce.

Current trends in Yahoo Japan auctions seem to be hitting at least 65,000yen which is around 550USD. shok.gif What is even more shocking is that, I heard in the JNDA 2007 edition, it is catalogued as 95,000yen which is around 800USD!!! Perhaps way too much for a modern silver proof coin shok.gif Fortunately I just paid a fraction of it! biggrin.gif

Edit:

New jpgs of the inside slip: (300k each though)
