However, while the above pictured 1922 cent has no visible mint mark, it was actually minted at the Denver Mint. This lack of mint mark is due to the fact that the Denver mint ran low on obverse dies. In order to meet their production goals, the obverse die they had left was polished down to remove clash marks and prolong the life of the die. The mint mark was totally removed during this polishing.

However, since no Lincolns were minted in Philadelphia in 1922, this variety has a strong following and is one of the most interesting of Lincoln cent varieties.
