I'm familiar with the German and Austrian notgeld, but I never really thought about the fact that other European countries experienced the same economic hardships. I recently acquired the following two examples of French notgeld for my aluminum collection.

First, from the Nice Chamber of Commerce (1920):



and the Marseille Chamber of Commerce (1916):



I don't know anything about these except for the fact that the standard English reference is Meyer. Another addition needed for my library. Can anyone else fill in more information?

Sure, it only covers up to 1919 but it is an excellent starting point to the subject and at that price you can't go wrong. The copy I bought from him about six years ago still had its orginal paper seal intact.

If you haven't come across Paul Withers or his site before, you really ought to take the time to check it out. paul is a mine of information concerning numismatic reference books, coins / tokens. Not only that but he is very helpful with it and could refer you to any specialist literature on most given topics.

I borrowd a book by Courtney Coffing called " World Notgeld 1914-1947". In the book they list the countries that issued notgeld during the various economic crisises of that time. There are more than 80 countries listed. They include:

Algeria, Belgium, Fiji, Finland, French West Africa, Hong Kong, Iceland, India, Japan, Mozambique, Philippines, Russia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia and Yugoslavia.

Pretty far reaching. Way more than I would ever guess. If I have a chance I'll put the whole list on the board.

I've got that one too.

It cost me $20 +pp0. The absolute worst numismatic purchase i've ever made. I'd happily part with it for the first offer of $5.

It's just an alphabetical listing of items. Great I suppose if you are a `checklist' freak but apart from the occasional thumbnail to remind you what the book is about there is no description or detail whatsoever. It doesn't separate out coin from paper either.

IMHO it's about as useful as a one legged man in an a**e kicking competion.
