While checking out what coins I have in my collection, I have found two 1907 silver 20 kopeks that look totally odd compared to the rest of the other 20 kopeks. And it seems that it might be only this year that something like this was minted:

I have checked other sites and here are some examples:

And if I compare them with another 20 kopek around the same era,

I hope you can see that the die size of the obverse seems to be awfully small.

I was thinking that it might be a die meant for a 15 kopek was accidently reengraved as a 20 kopek, but my theory was thrown out of the window as the inner diameter of the 1907 20 kopeks that I got measured 1.9mm against a typical 15 kopek 1.8mm (if I got them right...)

Any possible explaination of what is going on? confused1.gif

I think it just looks like that because the coin is very worn.

The initials on the reverse of the bottom sample are considerable larger compared to the examples on top.

silly question, but did you measure the actual diameter of the 1907 coins? Perhaps they used standard dies, but a slightly larger planchet for some strange reason?? not sure if the 07's are in the same size holder as the 09, but there appears to be more room around the 09.
