As part of the armistice between Finland and the Soviet Union in WWII, the peninsula of Porkkala was leased to the Soviet Union for 50 years. (For more info see Porkkala ) It was returned to Finland already in 1956 primarily because it became militarily obsolete and because the Soviet Union tried to use it as a PR piece to show that they could have good relations with their neighbors.
