Laminations occur when a blank is made incorrectly. If impurities, foreign matter, gases or other unintended materials were entrapped inside the metal when it was molten and poured into the ingot. The impurities will eventually show up in the planchets.

When the coin is struck the impurity shows up as jagged or rough areas on the coin which can be a number of different shapes.

If the impurity is near the surface of the blank, it may show up as flaking or peeled areas on the struck coin. No two laminations will every look exactly the same.
