I've always felt like the dollar coin could be a winner, if the banks, gov't and vending industries got behind it. It's a natural for tolls and parking meters and vending machines in general. It'a also a natural for slot machines - heck why make tokens at any cost when you can buy dollars for $1 each and them sell them for $1 each.

Make dollar tokens for 20c each, then put the rest (80c) in the bank. Most tokens taken as souvenirs don't come back, so that's an avenue of revenue.
