Anyone collect mint/proof sets from around the world? I am trying for a collection from specific years, 1974 (birth) and 1992 (graduation). I may expand that if I ever... 1. Get married or 2. Have a child or multiple children.

Nah, I do not specifically buy mint sets. Sometimes I get one only to crack it open so that I can fill some "holes" in my collection ...

There are some sets that I do not open this way - my annual set from the German Numismatic Office, for example, and a few, very few, others. But I do not buy sets in order to have sets from any special years.

I am one retarded buyer who just buys them with the original box and with the certificate of authencity where ever possible. It's just an awful habit I guess

If I buy sets, I want them with the original packaging. I may crack a lot of stuff out, but I always keep the packaging.

I collect world proof sets from 1972. When looking for a particular year you have to search around alot more. And they are no where near as common as US sets, which you can get anywhere. I was watching a few on eBay and missed when they closed, and they went for a low price too.

I haven't been able to find any dealers that carry a large assortment of world sets. If you know of any, please let me know.

I've noticed that there's not a lot on Ebay and most of them are either Caribbean or Africa.

I was watching a few for 1972 last week a Malta set went for $15.49 including shipping, a Great Britain set went for $7.25 including shipping. Those are 2 of the ones I missed out on bidding. I haven't checked any lately to see what is listed.

Not sure how picky you are, but be careful about the old-type British proof sets (prior to 1983). the majority of them tend to tone, and not always attractively.

Only from 2 countries: Finland and US. I have no intention of going to buy back years of US sets except for a specific few. Finn sets I intend to collect all of them. That is possible because official Mint sets began only in 1973, and proof sets in 1994.

Well now I know I won't need any Finnish Proof sets.

Oh, I have gotten my first one. I have 3 more sets on the way. 1974 Swiss Mint set, 1974 Singapore Mint set, and a 1992 Latvian Mint set. I will post them when they arrive.

I got a 1981 Belgium Mint set today even though it's out of my years.

I have all the Yugoslavian Mint sets, from 1982 to 2005.

Also have a Lithuanian set from 1991, a Kazakhstan set from 1993.

Somewhere or another around here I have a dozen or so Canadian PL sets.

Got half a dozen UK proof sets, and about that many Mint sets, too. These will probably be one of my focus areas for 2006.

I don't collect proof or mint sets although i am tempted by two areas alone.

British proof sets from 1971-1984 and Vatican euro mint sets 2002-Present.

Question is when did the Vatican start issuing these sets? I figure 2002? But i know some areas were issuing euros in 1999.

You're asking about straight Vatican Euro sets right, not pre-Euro?

Yes, the first Vatican euro set is dated 2002. Mintage in 2002 and 2003 was even lower than afterwards: First 65,000 (+ 9,000 proof), then 85,000 + 16,000. The Vacant See set has a mintage of 60,000.

I like low mintage figures. What's going rate on them? A couple of hundred i expect. I've got a 2005 set.

Not quite, I'm afraid. According to this page http://www.silvas.de/Vatikan.htm we are at about €150 right now. (Results from one week only.) But I don't really follow the prices since I just want the MC/SM/VA sets for my collection. If I get them, fine - if not, oh well.

Those Yugoslavian coins are nice.

The irony of that set is that the card says "Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia", yet the coins say "Federal Republic of Yugoslavia". They didn't take the name of SFRY until 1963. I have always assumed that they were made sometime in the late 1960's. There is a similar set for the 1963 (first SFRY) issues, and for the 1965 (monetary reform) issues, all with the same cards, just different dates.

I was able to return it and get my money back, no probs.

Here's better pics of the Latvian set. Does anyone know why they would have a "1992" set yet have a 1999 2 Lats? Obviously it cannot be a true 1992 set. I don't really care but I was just wondering.

I only have proof sets from three countries: the US, Canada, and Monaco. Of course, I have a bunch of proof individual issues as well.

Because that is neither a "1992" nor a "1999" set. Latvia does not issue the pieces/sets every year, so such mixed sets are normal. Maybe that is even better than making certain year/MM combinations for collectors only, which is what many euro countries do ...

Anyway. I do indeed collect proof and mint sets from a specific year...1966. It is one of my favorite collections. I only collect the coins, though. the packaging gets chucked. I have found quite a bit of it from that era to be not too healthy for the coins. PVC, Felt that seems to not be good storage material, etc. So I decided to just transfer them all to 2x2's.

I've had a few 74 coins start with PVC, I have removed those myself.

At least they all have the right date.
