Must be my day for questions. And I hope this isn't a stupid one. Please look at this Franklin. Part of the coin seems to have a milky or chalk like coating and the other part is very shiny. What is the stuff that is covering the shine?

To be quite honest it could be almost anything. And this will likely cause some major disagreement - and it ties in with one of your other questions - but I have seen coins that were dipped in acetone, and yes pure acetone, develop just that same look you describe. It does not happen all the time, but it happens.

It looks like an old frosting job gone bad. It looks exactly like an uncirc franklin that got a shot or two of a broncile (sp) mister on the surface then some of it got wiped away.

Could be hazing from adhesive residue that was partly cleaned with a solvent. Nice bell lines on that one.
