Hi all, can anyone recommend a few books on World and British coins, besides Krause. I am looking for books on general coinage as I want to start a specific collection but have no idea where to start. Probably will be British of some sort. Medieval????

There are many elements of collecting in British, so perhaps you might be more specific of your interests.

I myself have Seaby Catalogs for the more modern stuff, and Coincrafts for the older stuff from Scotland etc.

I have no idea where to start, I know I want to be earlier than 1800, so the range could go along way. I know nothing about this stuff, so a few books in general would help me familiarize myself.

Coincraft's Standard Catalogue of English and UK Coins 2000, that's your best starting point.

I'd second that. However, it doesn't give the full picture. If you want to consider coins from the North of the UK prior to the act of Union and the other bits that aren't `England', I would recommend that you also get Coincraft's sister book `Scotland, Ireland, Channel Islands and Isle of Man'. Armed with these two, you just about have the coinage scene covered as far as any `generalist' is concerned. Of course you will need specialist books if you go down the road of token coinages etcetera, but that's probably a bit into your future.............

I'm going to get the Coincraft, seems like I can learn from it even if I don't persue the Brit stuff. Seems boring to me, have to look at it some more.

`Scotland, Ireland, Channel Islands and Isle of Man'. is also a Seaby book. Beware Coincraft, there are some mistakes and the photos leave a lot to desire, however, it is a useful guide to identifying earlier 'British' coins. If you go for the Edwards (I,II & III) the drawings are excellent.

What if one only needs to go back to the 18th century; would the Spinks suffice?

I am going to get the Spinks too seems like a good reference.

I think I am going to go with the Stuart and Hanover Monarchs, just a type fo each for now, then expand.

If you want a book on general coinage of different nations - Coins of Medieval Europe by Philip Grierson, published by Seaby.

Grierson was Professor of Numismatics at the Universities of Cambridge and Brussels. He is also Honorary Keeper of the Coins in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge. LINK

Professor Grierson is extremely knowledgeable. I have written to him several times to discuss various coins and he is always more than willing to help out and share his knowledge.

Fitzwilliam Museum has helped me out too in the past, i don't know if it was Grierson though.

I may be a bit late, but if you want something cheap that may give you an idea of what is there in British coinage look at Collectors' Coins GB 2006 from Rotographic.

You can buy from auctionmonster (link on my signature), where I have put them on sale in behalf of the publisher at his normal price.

I buy them every year and for under £5 you will not find anything else worth buying about UK coins.
