Everytime I get on the system the number of pages of posts since my last visits just grows and grows. However many of the posts in the list are not new and quite a few are threads where I made the last post some number of days ago.

I usually "Mark all posts as read" after I've read everything and it seems to work fine.
Gosh, I'll give it a try. Seems the straightforward answer was staring me in the face. Thanks.

that's what i do, too. that means that every evening i'm faced with three or four pages of new stuff, which is (generally) manageable ...
I just use the constant refresh method, that seems to work too.
