The Gold Dollar from 1868?

How do you know if it is real or not? Someone is selling one here and I want to make sure it is the real thing, if that is possible.

I don't know spanish, so I couldn't understand the thread you linked. Gold dollars and $3 have been very heavily counterfeited over the years, so it's best to use caution, especially when buying them raw. The most basic diagnostics you could do is comparing the coin to photos of authentic coins for the placement of letters and the date, also checking the specifications (this coin should be 14.3 mm in diameter, and weigh about 1.7g). You should also examine the surfaces of the coin for raised metal, perhaps dots or other disturbances as this could be a sign of a struck counterfeit. Otherwise, you could have it authenticated by one of the major grading services (NGC, PCGS, ANACS), but it's hard to offer opinons without a photo or having the coin in hand. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

There are a few pics in that thread further down, if you want to have a look, I would apreciate it.

If you click on the pics they are a bit bigger than they are originally.

Thanks.

I could only see the smaller pictures in the one link. Can you post a larger photo here?

I just get this message from the links:

Which I gathered to mean that I need to log in to view them. confused1.gif

I didn't know that... do you mind logging in?

I don't have a login to that site since I don't speak the language it wouldn't do me much good. Is there any way you could attach the photos here?

Let's see if this works.

Those photos are better, and the reverse looks ok, but I would need to see a larger photo with better lighting to say difinitively. The reverse looks bad, the surfaces seem very odd, and there appears to be a big gouge in it which if genuine would impair the value. The side image (edge) looks uneven, like perhaps this coin was used in jewelry. If it was me, I wouldn't buy this coin.

OK, thanks, I guess that is what I needed to know.

Juan, I could buy you one here if you'd like, probably better price than an ebay auction and you would get a genuine coin. Let me know.

For how much do they go?

The only reason I asked is that someone has one for sale in Numismata and I wanted to make sure he wasn't trying to cheat anyone...

In any case, did you see my 8 Reales Thread? I know you come across lots of silver... bunny.gif
