I want to bid on them but without the year/series I can't make an estimate of their worth.

They are either 1993 or 1995 with the Bentsen signature, I am leaning 1995 with the Withrow signature.
San_Miguel98
Sep 21 2005, 03:38 PM
judging by the signatures, the left belongs to treasurer mary ellen withrow, and the right belongs to secretary lloyd bentsen. since lloyd bentsen was only secretary until 1995 (to be replaced by robert rubin), it's pretty safe to assume the note is series 1993.

95 is not in the book...hmmm
is there a site you can see what/where bills were minted in by year?

i found the above image from a dealer i do business with. he doesn't have any of the '95s, and the rest of his stock is the 96 big-head series. there might be another dealer somewhere out there with more images/dates.

If they are 1993 UNC go for $150 each...these look like they have some corner issues so probably grade VF and I'm gusing $120 range. Accurate guess?
jtryka
Sep 21 2005, 04:00 PM
I never realized Withrow's signature was on the series 1993 notes since she didn't become treasurer until 1994.
San_Miguel98
Sep 21 2005, 04:03 PM
they're series '93s.
my catalog lists 1993 as letters a-l, and the 1995 series was only for the 1 - 20 dollar bills.

Or better yet, how much would you pay?

I thought I remember reading about a series 1995 $100 in the Krause book, but I can check again tonight.

I looked on the Heritage auction archives and the 1993 star notes in unc were going between $180 and $200 each, the non star notes were about $120 for VF to XF examples. Personally, I would not pay more than $125 each for unc examples since I got a series 1990 in unc. for face from the bank about a year and a half ago.
San_Miguel98
Sep 21 2005, 04:11 PM
hard to tell grade....esp. if the seller put the $1000 wrapper on there himself. some people put the best looking note on top and hide the well-circulated ones in the back. but if the bank did it, then the rounded corners might be the only wear and you're looking at xf+ notes all around. bit of a gamble though, without the seller showing high-quality separate scans.
detz
Sep 21 2005, 04:13 PM
I might go $110 each...since I don't know what's under the first/last(they show the back). Says "THEY ARE EXTRA CRISP" so I'm assuming that's all of them. If they are in sequence that would make the price more to I assume.
detz
Sep 21 2005, 04:21 PM
My original goal for these "old notes" was to build a series of them to give to my kids since you don't see the old style notes anymore. I figured I was willing to pay %10 more than face for old(crisp) bills to put away. I got my $10's and $20's so I need $5's, $50's and $100's. So going by my original 10% mark $10 extra for each would work fine.
detz
Sep 21 2005, 06:07 PM
I actually went $15 on each...I have a feeling they are in good condition and could sell for at least $120 if need be. I have a feeling I will be outbid though...49 minutes left.

OK guys, this is really weird. I wont the auction for....$965...that's less than face value!!! Now I'm worried that it's a scam because who would loose $35 on this deal when they could take it to the bank and cash them in? What should I do now, anyone know how protected I am with Paypal?

Protected by Paypal? HAHAHA! With big money items I will never touch Paypal. Only U.S. Postal money orders for stuff like that (screw with the post office and they don't take kindly to it).
I've been screwed by Paypal once....never again shall that happen.

Paypal is a joke!! And why would I say that you ask....because eBay owns them!! I got screwed over by paypal and ebay a few years ago. Out of the roughly $360 I lost, ebay will reimburse you $100 of course that is before they take out $25 for fees. So I got a big $75 back and they didn't even go after the person. And just last year I got a bounced check letter from my bank that a $1139.09 paypal withdrawl was attempted on my account. Mind you I hadn't used paypal in months before this happened. I spent 3 months complaining to paypal that I didn't authorize it. I had to send USPS about 40 pages of emails to them. And finally they released my account. I had already closed that bank account and had to open another.
So good luck to you on your purchase.

Wow, feedback of 2! And you need to pay within 48 hours??? This one does not pass the smell test for me. I would have asked beforehand if the seller would accept escrow if you offered to pay, that way you would be out a little for the fee, but could be sure the deal would be done. If not, I don't know what sort of protection Paypal or credit cards might offer since this is technically a purchase of cash, which entails a whole lot of screwy rules!
Good luck! I fear you may need it!

From the paypal site....
At PayPal, your security is our top priority. PayPal Buyer Protection is offered as a way to make our online trading community even safer and more secure.
With PayPal Buyer Protection, qualified purchases are eligible for up to $1,000.00 USD coverage at no additional cost. Additional coverage may apply for purchases made with PayPal Buyer Credit.
When a buyer files a claim through PayPal Buyer Protection, PayPal works with both the buyer and the seller to gather the details of the transaction. We investigate the facts of the case and make every effort to come to a fair conclusion.
Transactions Covered by PayPal Buyer Protection
If you paid for an item and never received it or received an item that was significantly not as described, your transaction must meet each of the following requirements to be eligible for PayPal Buyer Protection:
The PayPal Buyer Protection icon must be displayed in the Seller Information box on eBay
Your purchase must be a physical item -- services and intangible items are not covered
You must use PayPal to pay for the item and must use the seller's email address associated with the listing. To make sure of this, use the grey Pay Now button you'll see when the listing closes on eBay.
I made one statement in bold because that has to be the biggest loophole there is!!

Well, I'm a risk taker. I called her and talked but she was at work so she said she would call me back. She called but I missed her call and she left a voice mail saying that shes new and there is not much she can do if it does not reach the "face value" since that's how ebay is setup. I have her number and address...I paid using American Express so lets hope all goes well.

If it does...what a deal I got...if not, I will be spending hours on the phone trying to get back what ever I can.

Good luck. I would have pushed them to go escrow...but she kinda had you over the barrel since you agreed to pay within 48 hours. If it makes you feel any better, I had kept 4 super-crisp sequential bills from this series, but my wife decided to spend some of them. Of course, she grabbed the two middle bills, leaving me with 2 non-sequential bills left.
I like to buy cheap stuff on ebay. The expensive stuff is too scary.

Amen brother! I only use Paypal with people I trust (here for example). Someone once tried to screw me out of $700 in car parts that I waited on for almost 3 months. The post office sent them a "nice" letter explaining things. A week later I had parts at my house
Good luck with your purchase. Maybe this is one of those "once in a lifetime" type things. Remember there are good people........but few and far between.

Well....I got a tracking number from her today! This is looking very good, I really can't beleive this deal if in fact everything works out the way it should. I should be able to sell those bills each for around $120....that's a nice profit huh?

You could sell them for that if they are crisp unc, but the more I looked at that photo, the more I suspect that these are circulated bills. Just make sure they aren't counterfeit!

Counterfeit, that would suck...if they are I spend them...

How can I tell, anyone know on these older style bills?
Redbook says $150 if they are UNC that's why I'm guessing $120 if they are a AU...we'll see I guess I'm going to scan them all in when i get them. If not, I still made money since I got them for less than they are worth..unless they are counterfeit!
jtryka
Sep 23 2005, 02:44 PM
on the series 1990 and 1993 $100 bills, they do have the security thread in them, so you can hold them up to the light and see if they have the thread. This is the easiest thing to do, however not foolproof as the more advanced counterfeiters from the former Soviet Union and middle east found ways to fake the thread, hence the need for the big head $100 bills!

Sep 23 2005, 02:49 PM
Well, people havn't see these bills in so long I wonder if they would know what to do when they got them. The pen thing wont work on them so if I cashed them wonder what would happen.
jtryka
Sep 23 2005, 03:45 PM
They aren't that unusual, and they still do circulate (the average lifespan of a $100 is many times longer than the 18-month life of a $1 bill). The pens should still work on them as it reacts with the paper, and these notes are still printed on the same cotton-linen fibre as current notes. I think you are starting to get paranoid now!

OK, well, you guys were right it was a scam. Now, I'm out $965...great. From that auction wouldn't you think they were real bills?! Well, I got them in the mail and it's "small" novalty bills. I called her up and she said the description said that's what they are but I told her in the collection industy that's not what it means. I told her I was going to contact the authorities and she said she was going to talk to the person who sold them to her. Any ideas on what I should do?
She said she made no false statements in the description and she thinks that these are worth $965?! I'm mad, and upset at myself....I need help.

Misleading...no?

Also, she only has two feedback but those are for REAL coins so one would assume that bills would be real too.

Sep 27 2005, 02:31 PM
All of our current notes are the same size, so to be real, these must be the same size as the ones in your wallet. Before you file a police report, you should try to work things out with the seller and see if she will just issue a refund if you return the items. If that doesn't work then let loose with the authorities.
