Tiffibunny
If you are... do you keep the original packaging or trash it?
Tiffibunny
Oh, and yes. I am a coin cracker. I do keep most of the original boxes, etc if I don't damage them too much.
Stujoe
I am a habitual coin cracker. rofl1.gif I almost always break up sets to put in my own holders and collection. Uniformity! I wonder if this is another obsessive/compulsive symptom on my part? wink.gif

Most of the packaging gets trashed.
AuldFartte
Hmm. Well, I've never cracked one out of a slab;
I have removed some from original mint packaging, though.
So, how the heck do I answer this one huh.gif
gxseries
Not me... I always keep mine as intact as possible. Including lame paper coverings etc. And whenever possible, I hunt down for their original boxes and certificates or I wouldn't buy them in the first place... sure... they are a lot more expensive... the worst thing I ever paid for is when a coin is supposely around 30USD or so and I paid almost thrice of that sad.gif
Tiffibunny
Now, here's something hilarious for you....

My method of cracking slabbed coins and/or those really tough proof sets like the 76 that the darn plastic is molded together. I use this handy dandy tool...

One good whack with one of those cracks them pretty good. I actually cut the top edge off the ANACS slab on the Morgan I did the other week. It's nifty.

I'd use the sometimes option.

shok.gif Looks lethal! laugh.gif

I usually try to just just snip off the corners with a pair of diagonal cutters. Your way looks much more fun, though. laugh.gif

I usually do that too for my birth year set... It gives me the safety that the coins probably haven't been messed with.

Then I crack those suckers out. bgreen.gif
Dan769
I have to say no, although I did crack a couple CC Morgans out of ACG holders for resubmital to PCGS. I can't bring my self to crack out my Carson City collection. Probably because I have no where to put them, or in case of needed resale I can get a better price.

My CC's are not the only slabs I have, I have some old gold and steel cents and a RPM Jefferson nickel still entombed. I just have nothing to put them in, I have no definitive reason...
Tiffibunny
Hence the "I keep it if I don't damage it too much." Ahem. bwink.gif

(Oh, and... it is fun!)

I have cracked and I will crack again!
coins out of slabs, mint sets out of holders.
These are, however, isolated incidents.
My usual rule is to leave well enough alone.
Trantor_3
Definite cracker / cutter.

Then, I do keep the original packing as it usually contains info on the coin.

I haven't got/had any slabbed coins yet so I'm not experienced in that way.

I don't have a nifty cleaver like the bunny, but I do have

But I'd never use that on a slab, I'd use a

What is this a "my knife is bigger than your knife" competition? blol.gif I don't have a saw or a vice, so the cleaver it shall remain! bwink.gif

I'm with Auldfartte! Not having to suffer the plastic tombs, I always liberate British coins from 'presentational packaging', but keep the container in as good a condition as possible. ! may want to sell the coins someday! biggrin.gif
gxseries
lol, well I guess I only do it when they come in slabs. The main reason is because I don't get to see the thickness and the edge of the coins. Geez, everyone has to remember that a coin is a 3D object, not a 2D sad.gif

I would be so happy slabbing my coins away if they were all slabbed like the following link: http://cgi.ebay.com/RUSSIA-ALBERTUS-ROUBLE...1QQcmdZViewItem

After reading this topic, all i can say is that i really hope Tiff and Erik still have 5 fingers on each hand. smile.gif

BTW, never bought anything on a slab.

Jose cool.gif
Monster110
Yeah i usally just throw the trash away unless i can reuse it (2x2 card board)
Kat
Wow, you mean I'm ALLOWED to crack 'em open?!?!?!?!
bustchaser
Crack 'em...Crack 'em ALL!!!!

From $100.00 coins--the cheapest I have ever bought slabbed--to $6200.00 coins--the most expensive I have ever bought slabbed--they all get liberated as soon as I get them home.
Metalman
I will crack any container holding a coin !!! I keep the original packaging in most cases,,

Nothing like cutting coins out in the moring !!! Plastic or film doesnt matter !!!

'You call that a knife?'

Seriously i'm all for coin nudity. Slabs get cracked very quickly, i haven't broken any sets up yet, but then again i don't exactly buy sets anyhow.

Now that it's out of that ANACS AU holder, you could send it to PCGS and they'd grade it MS66, probably. ahaha

Seriously, that one looked like an unc to me. I couldn't see what they based an AU grade on.

I do crack for my albums. I keep the paper inserts in the PCGS slabs and the foam inserts in the ANACS slabs for my records....
Mediccoin
I can't vote, I have never cracked one personally, but I have seen plenty of them cracked open. evilbanana.gif

Have never cracked a one! In fact, I have some that are in original packaging and never opened! I cannot bring myself to do it!! Somebody help me, pleaseeeee!!!

cry.gif
Trantor_3
ok, send them over......
ccg
I've cut up mint and proof sets, but I've never actually killed a slab. I have, however, cut out TPG coins. (ICCS in Canada sticks graded coins in a sealed plastic flip, so no big knife required.)
Tiffibunny
I actually have my ICCS dollars still in the flips. I guess I don't crack everything. bwink.gif I actually keep my US commems in the airtites and boxes they arrive in.

Tiffibunny
blol.gif I was actually afraid to break stuff out at first. I didn't start that until I got my albums. See, I don't know if I'm going to bust out that little gold piece either. bwink.gif
Sir Sisu
I voted sometimes, though I have never as of yet. It would depend on the packaging.

A slabbed coin I would probably remove. However, as I do not own any slabbed, I think the first one I ever get I may keep that way just so that I have an example to show.

Mint sets and such I do not break apart as that is why I get them: as sets. All other packaging (boxes, certificates, etc) I save as well -all stored in a large box seperately though. I save these only for possibly future sales, as they usually command a better premium than without them.
henare
make sure you wear eye protection if you're gonna do that with the cleaver! some of those plastic thingies are splintery!
Tiffibunny
Meh, I like to live dangerously. bgreen.gif

Apart from the Lizzie Borden imagery, that is a nice little cent - this is a good post for Linda to check out with reference to her Dad's unc Lincolns - makes a nice comparison photo.
