Sounded like a dumb idea to start with...
I don't get it. To help fund the Olympics? Geez, I'm sure that there are other rooms to find such savings.
But yes, I wouldn't be against a 5 dollar coin though. Japan made that switch of 500yen (around 4.55US?) note to coin around 1982 (if I am not wrong?) Although that coin has been hit by two major counterfeit scams real hard this decade

Well, Canada never put much money into its athletes. Most of them work f/t at near minimum wage to get around.

Hate to break the bad news to you, but the USAOC does no better. Many countries fund their athletes as a prestige thing etc. Is it best? Does it make them no longer amatuers but professionals? Who knows?
