Full Version: Is this the best Coin Forum?

CoinPeople.com > Main Numismatic Forums > Coin Forum
idunk
Do any of you have an opinion if this coin forum is the best or one of the best on the internet for U.S. coinage? Any other good ones you care to share? Maybe it's not fair to ask that!?
Stujoe
I think a lot of us are biased in our opinion of whether this is the 'best' Coin Forum. grin.gif
Rotten Rodney
of course this is the best we got a broad interest and most of us are nice most of the time And the fact we got areas for just fun debate and gettinng to know each other is wonderful . . . . Most forums are all business and no play and some have play areas that are so Bias and Well Rude unlike here We play well with others and now I'll pay the mic to Nepolian and wander back to the asylum. . .
Tiffibunny
It's probably the best question/answer coin forum on the net for sure. We don't think people silly for asking questions and everyone likes to help out.
geordie
Horses for courses! I prefer Predecimal for English and Continental subjects and this one for 'all things American'!
Ętheling
It not the best one for British coins.

For US coins though i'd be tempted to say yes, the reason is having been on many other forums over the years this must be the first one where you can have a discussion about "bullion" etc. and it stays civil.

If you did that on some other forums disagreements would turn into personal insults which would then turn into a flame war. This forum has always been somewhat of an exception in that respect, and therefore gets a worthy note in my book as far as numismatic discussions go.
gxseries
Why wouldn't you ask something about US coinage and determine if the answer is up to your satisifaction. If it doesn't satisify you, you can always try others. bleh.gif smile.gif
henare
it's the best for sharing information with people about coins. if you're lookingn for reference book information you may or may not find it here.

it's like it says on the banner: "Come for the coins, stay for the people."

I can't say whether it's the best forum because it's the only one I use.
jtryka
I use this forum and the NGC forum (boards.collector-society.com). They both strike me as having folks that are interested collectors, willing to help each other out. The NGC board seems to have more depth in US coins, whereas this one seems to have a bit more international flavor. Both are very much enjoyable though, without the personal fights that seem to prevail on some other forums I've seen.

And since no one else said it, Welcome to the boards idunk! bthumbsup.gif
Stujoe
I think everyone else has pretty much covered my thoughts. Each forum has its own flavor and there are a number of good ones out there.

I think some of the highlights of this one are, civility and respect among users, an exteme willingness to help, a focus on coins as a hobby, a bunch of features that are beyond just forums: the PCIs, News, the Mint, coin museums, articles, etc and the willingness to let users do their own thing such as the with the Specialized forums.

Rarely will a question here go unanswered and its never for a lack of caring. There are a lot of very knowledgeable people here and, while I am not one of them, I am pretty good with a search engine. grin.gif

And, finally, we have the Retro CoinPeople skin/style/interface which is the best forum interface ever design in the history of mankind. rofl1.gif
SilverDollarMan
Hell yes, this is the best! I also love cointalk dot org. I'm with jtryka, NGC is the best TPG board.

Yes this is the very best of numismatic forums and for US coinage. Yes, Check out Numislink here for other numismatic websites. Yes, it is fair to ask any and all questions here that pertain to numismatics and practically anything else for that matter. We are the absolute most friendliest numismatist forum around. Thank You yahoo.gif BTW, Welcome to the Coinpeople aka our family bthumbsup.gif
Dan769
As others have stated this is the best all purpose US coin forum going. PCGS has a nice coin board there, but they talk at a higher level (ie: expensive coins) and sometimes they get very arguementative.

This is the Ford F150 of coin boards, solid, dependable and reliable.

I like this forum a lot but also find freedoms on CoinCommunity.com that is not offered anywhere else. Both forums are user friendly and a great bunch of collectors in both places. Some of you are members of both forums just as I am. I would suggest you all check out this 6 month old group and see the vastly growing number of posts and members in those short 6 months. Give it a try! ok.gif Now don't get me wrong as I am here to stay as well but need a little variety in my life as well!
idunk
Well thanks for the great response, you certainly answered my question!! You really are a friendly bunch, and I feel welcome here! Thanks again!

I only post on these two forums and agree there are a lot of knowledgeble
people on both
I read but do not post on german and a flemish forum because they have a very extensive knowledge base on (horror of horrors) coincleaning methods and I like to read those allthough I do not allways agree on the methods used

Dag, Dan, I hope this board don't break as oft as a ford! hehe

I will tell you something that should once and for all answer your question.

Since I came here, I still didn't have any complaint at all about my continious questions about anything and everything... that is saying!!!

This is by far the best you will find anywhere.

But as someone already mentioned, if you want somewhere for english coins Predecimal is a good one too.

Coin cleaning is still a useful art (or science) but should only be practiced by experts if the service is done to order for the owner of the coin. With the advent of retoning technology, there are probably many more cleaned coins being sold today than at any time since the anti-cleaning fetish became the latest fashion.

Well it's the best, since you convinced even some non-numismatic people to join. Banivechi was having so much fun I knew there's something going on here biggrin.gif

It's one of the best communities I have seen and I do activate in more than 70 forums now. Stujoe, you've done an awesome thing here smile.gif

Yes, I have an opinion on that subject.

Yes, there are others I'd like to share (www.cointalk.org).

I won't say it's the best, but it's certainly one of the best, and with good reason. It's the people who post here that make this site so inviting.

I always enjoy visiting, whether I post or not. It's just a pleasant place to be on the internet. smile.gif

Sometimes I think we are too obsessed with the "best". But, yeah, for me, this place is a heck of a lot of fun.

It is a very friendly place as virtually everyone on here is polite and pleasant. Maybe the moderators are doing such a great job that I don't even know they are there. If you haven't seen a lot of bizzare monitor-muscle induced Esquabbling, then you should be happy that you don't know what you are missing. Entertaining to a degree, I suppose, but rather annoying after you see it a few times.

There is plenty of expertise here. I certainly want that and I also do not want to "know" more than anyone else on the forum. There is a great range in the degree of expertise - so everybody can make a contribution and that makes for a lively atmosphere. The place has as much or more tolerance than others I have seen.

Lots of activity and a huge amount of variety, so when I have the time I can wander into "darkside" topics about coins or (*shudder*) currency that I don't collect.

The "conversations" are enthusiastically on topic (as I broadly define on-topic). Not much in the way of stuffiness, confrontation or elitism - but not sanitized - plenty of opinions. That is a huge plus for a coin club (and that is how I think of these types of forums).

Fantastic show and tell here!

I guess I would state my opinion thusly: There are many coin forums out there and I am happy to be a member of this one.

I agree. When I came here I was a little scared to ask questions because the possibility of being made fun of. Doesn't bother me one bit now because I know the people here are willing to help and they were in my shoes at one point. Heck, where else can I get a answer to my questions within 10 minutes by knowledgable people?

I do "feel at home" here and won't leave for a very, very, very long time.
