I have a World Commem thread so here's the US side. I just visited my first coin shop yesterday and I picked these up.

Very nice. I have always thought that Dolley Madison coin was very nicely done on both sides.

I don't collect them but I like them.

QUOTE("Sir Sisu")

Yes, I think so to. I have one myself. I guess T'bunny got it because it has her name on it.

I collect the unc US commems, though I do have some proofs.

I collect a few. My favorites are the Oregon Trail and Vermont. I also have a San Diego and Lexington-Concord I'd like to sell to raise money for banknote purchases.

I haven't delved into old ones due to cost, but if I do, I want the Texas 50c.
Tiffibunny
QUOTE("Stujoe")
I used to have a nice Texas. it is a good looking design. A number of the old ones are. I really love the Oregon Trail.

Now I like that one a lot.  I was hoping someone would come along and post some of these old ones.  I haven't seen a whole lot of them.

Someone said Oregon Trail?

WHOW! The US really make nice coins!!!! I guess they are way out of my price range!
Tiffibunny
QUOTE("Stujoe")

Great toning too.
Tiffibunny
QUOTE("unclebobo")
The old commemoratives are out of my price range, except the 1492 Columbian half.  I have a special place in my heart for the Statue of Liberty proof  dollar.  I had one given to me when I was 13 by my aunt.  It was the first silver dollar and the first proof I had ever seen.  biggrin.gif

QUOTE("Dan769")
I have a few of the modern US ones, Yellowstone, Capital visitors center, but otherwise no. I love some of the older ones, but outta my price range right now.

If the do one with trains on it, i'll probably buy it. smile.gif

Nice T'bunny! I was following eBay for that one last year, but only the Iceland version was up for offer. I still need to get that one. Would you mind (here or PM) letting me know what you paid for it? I would like to have an idea myself what to expect.

I think the modern commemoratives are an interesting group of coins to collect and study. They are not limited, for the most part, to the design restrictions that are placed on coinage designed for every day circulation. In many ways it is like collecting type coins rather than a run of dates of a particular series where the only thing different from coin to coin is typically the date. They are much less expensive than the traditional commemorative which would be my first choice if I had the discretionary money to do so.

One thing I've noticed is that many of the modern coins have appreciated rather nicely the last few years which is a nice plus.
Tiffibunny
QUOTE("28 plain")
I don't collect the moderns, but I have several of each of my two faves, the Booker T half and the Stone Mountain half.  Three truly great Virginians depicted on US coins on those two issues.
Tiffibunny
QUOTE("SFDukie")
Hi Uncle,
Booker T Washington, GW Carver, Monroe and Stone Mtn are among  the less expensive classic commems can pick them up for under $50- 1st two are less than columbian expo.  Monroe not much more.
Don

QUOTE("28 plain")

Not always so.  Columbians are the cheapest and the ones most likely to turn up in circulated condition.  Stoney's are hard to find for under $50 in MS and Monroes in MS are as well.  Officially counterstamped stonies are worth hundreds in MS.    I like the reverse on the Monroe doctrine half.
Tiffibunny
QUOTE("Dockwalliper")
The only modern Commem's I bought were the 1986 Statue of Liberty Half and Dollar. I liked the designs.

I have the 1986 and 1987 Prestige Proof Sets and so have those commemorative coins.  I started collecting last year so I purchased both of the commemorative coins from last year and will continue to collect them.
Tiffibunny
QUOTE("whohah")
As a 6th generation Texan, I have a soft spot for the Texas Centennial halves; however, I like the Monroe Half a lot due to the innovative design on the reverse.  The two women who form the North and South American continents is a fine design.  Curiously, it is not original with that half.  The same design was used on the reverse of the Pan American Fair of 1901's medal... The Pan American Fair where McKinnley was shot in in 1901...

QUOTE("bustchaser")
Wow, 3 pages already.  I bet you have all been waiting with bated breath for me to jump in and complain that commemoratives aren't coins.  Well, they aren't.  laugh.gif

Now that that is over...I have a semi confession to make.  Although I don't collect US commems my wife seems to think that I do.  She bought me a Texas for Christmas one year and I made a fuss over it.  Hey, small thing to do in order to keep the peace.

WRONG!!  Ever since every birthday, every aniversary, every Christmas I get a new commemorative.  Actually, she has done a good job picking them out.  I wish I knew her dealer.

Anyway, here is the one that started it all...Leave it to a Texan to not know what side of the coin the eagle goes on.

I have to say that the commemorative halves do seem to be the forgotten part of US numismatics. Well, except for the Columbians which seem dirtcommon and the relatively common BTWs.
Tiffibunny
QUOTE("Tiffibunny")

I don't think they're forgotten.  Just most of them are really expensive.
