The Central Bank of Cyprus has started a design competition for the euro and cent coins to be issued probably in 2007 (see michigan's post in the News section). According to the rules of the competition there will be three different designs - one for the "reddish" coins (1/2/5 ct), one for the "yellowish" coins (10/20/50 ct) and one for the bimetallic €1 and €2 pieces.

The themes proposed by the central bank are:
Culture: The Idle from Pomos (Shouldn't that be "idol"?, C.)
Nature: The Mouflon
Sea: The Ship of Kyrenia

Images of the sujets to be depicted are in the PDF file (see link at the bottom of the page). Well, of course I am a little disappointed since once again a future euro country will have only three designs instead of eight :-) But three is still better than one ...

For me, I find that I would prefer 4 designs: 1 for "red", 1 for "yellow", and 1 each for €1 and €2 coins.

In the conditions of the design competition, it does say "idol". Guess they fixed that quickly. Also, on the country specific sides of euro coins from Cyprus, the country name will appear in three languages - Greek, Turkish, and English - according to the amended conditions:

That is, we will probably see KYPROS (in Greek characters), KIBRIS and CYPRUS on future euro and cent coins from Cyprus.

I can't wait for the Euro & Euro-Cent coins & notes from Malta & Cyprus to be released,as I have currently got the Irish Euros in my collection of British Commonwealth coins.

Here is a nicely done Flash presentation of the coins from the Republic of Cyprus. It covers the cents (and mils) coins, and also the planned euro and cent issues:

Are these coins to be used in the UK controlled area, the UN controlled area, the Turk controlled area, or the Greek controlled area? No need to answer post...

OK. biggrin.gif Since they replace the Cyprus pound and cent coins, the answer is obvious anyway. What is a little odd indeed is that, contrary to the 2005 plans, the country name will now be in Greek and Turkish only ...
