At the age of 10, Stephen the Great was crowned by Rome as the first King of Hungary. According to Hungarian tradition, Pope Silvester II sent a magnificent jeweled gold crown to Stephen (which became the symbol of Hungary under the name of the Holy Crown) along with an apostolic cross and a letter of blessing in the beginning of January, 1001 to officially recognize him as a Christian king of Europe. Shortly after his death, healing miracles were known to have occurred at his tomb. Stephen was canonized by the Vatican as Saint Stephen of Hungary in 1083. His crown, known as the Holy Crown, is currently enshrined in the National Museum of Budapest<br>

The Esztergom Basilica, located in the town of Esztergom, is the seat of the Catholic Church in Hungary. As a building, it is the largest church in Hungary, and the fifth largest church in the world. Its dome is 71.5 m high inside, with a diameter of 33.5 meters, and is 100 m high from the outside. The altarpiece, by Michelangelo Grigoletti, is the largest painting in the world painted on a single piece of canvas. The basilica is also known for its Bakócz Chapel, which was built by Italian masters between 1506–1507. Its walls are adorned with Tuscan Renaissance motifs, and is the most precious remaining example of Renaissance art in Hungary.
