This coin is described as genuine
However the smoothness of the surface disturbs me
Can this coin be real ?
Could it be a silver coin with goldplating ?
ageka
Reverse
failed because of global limits
Stujoe
Is this in an auction or other such online venue?
ageka
It is in a german auction
There is a guarantee but no take back possible blink.gif
After 3 days price is 1 euro smile.gif
Stujoe
It almost looks like one of those replicas put out by National Collectors Mint or some such place but I couldn't find any 1904's done by them. It has that 'too good' look to it.

Stujoe
Or it could be real and just not his picture. doh.gif

PCGS Proof-65 Cameo. No wonder it looks so good. wink.gif

That was my second idea ; I repeatedly asked for a raw scan and got no answer
The link you posted is indeed the picture he showed inclusive the slight
blemish at 5 o'clock
Man you are fast
I webcrawled for two hours and could not find that 1904
Thanks
Stujoe
It was a lucky hit. After I found the auction, I went to CoinFacts to check on examples of the date and there it was. wink.gif

I first searched for fakes and found no silver goldclad 1904

Then I searched for proofs and found this matte I did no know exists

http://cgi.liveauctions.ebay.com/ws/eBayIS...&category=52618

Then I found a real proof but with slightly wobbly surface like
I would expect which made me even more doubtfull of the picture

It looks like they just copied the photo, and by the way, that is a photo of a genuine proof 1904 double eagle. I would not purchase any 1904 double eagle from Europe though, as that is one of the most commonly counterfeited dates (which makes this even more suspect given the bogus photo).

Good catch, Stu. That one is so obviously an extremely high grade proof you have to wonder why it's in an auction online. Gorgeous coin. I'm partial to that super glossy type of proof.

I would have put even odds that it was a repro when I first saw it. Sometimes you see a coin that is so above and beyond what you expect for the type that you start looking for 'Copy' on it somewhere. wink.gif I once saw a Proof Morgan that was like that...I would have sworn it was fresh off of one of today's presses.

Some proof Washington quarters I've seen look like chrome plated replicas with the glossy smoothness of the surfaces. That's a lovely proof type, IMO.
ageka
I had three thoughts

1) a goldclad because there are allways goldclads on offer
but without the word copy or the word copy removed

http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewIt...8319032165&rd=1

2) a software manipulated photo with despeckling and all
the other odds added in

3) A copy cat picture of somebody elses photos
When I asked the question I was leaning to the last possibility
because all the coins he has for sale have a different background
and we all stick to our preferred background

But only Stujoe found the original smile.gif

That is a very good point! If a seller has a number of auctions up, the pictures are almost always going to look very, very similar. If they are wildly different, some warning bells should start ringing.
ageka
Ok this one looks too good to be true also
Any idea were this picture was lifted from if it was

No idea, but I am not going to buy into that. Zero feedbacks = too risky.

The first picture I posted was a 28 feedbacker and I am now tracking one with
199 feedbacks who says the picture is the coin you buy but he is lying
because he uses the same reverse for at least three coins
Feedback is a minimum but many people do not know how to grade themselves and do not have a loupe to look what they bought nor a weighing scale
And they probably leave a positive feedback for delivery within a reasonable time for a coin that looks like what they thouhgt they bought
gxseries
Yes, I know. It's easy to make drones of such auction "sellers". Some rumors are that they are programmed to do something like that, which is pretty horrible. Of course I do know that feedbacks are almost useless, it's still a way to check. smile.gif

I do not think I bought from anybody with less then 20 pos feedbacks
I will send them any kind of question and look how fast and what kind of
answer they give
If the answer is timely and friendly and correct I may bid
However some are so dumb that if you ask for a better pic they just sent the same bad 96 dpi but enlarged which is useless and 90% do not seem to know any better
Virtually nobody seems to understand a 300 dpi bitmap request
UncleBobo
I have asked several different sellers for better photographs and have never recieved even a courtesy response. Needless to say, I didn't bid
ageka
Half of the requests I send out to ask for mailing cost do not get an answer
and then they are surprised I suppose why their coin does not fetch a good price
ageka
Th!is coin is offered as a fake 1918 sovereign

Especially the rims give it away

ageka
I know hardly anything about silver coins
This 1900 one ounce silver walking liberty only weighs 0.71 ounce
It is not mine but somebody is asking for help on it
Is this a common fake ?
It tested no silver with acids would it be aluminium ?
