And another 5 cent euro?! ......found like 6 of those now lol.

Sorry, but I don't understand that... There are €uros in the USA in circulation?

Yes, there are. I got a 2 Eurocent from Germany, mintmark J in a roll of coins about two months ago.

Previously I got a 1 Eurocent from France last year sometime.

The most unusual find this year is the 7 sided 20 pence from the UK in a roll of nickels.
Vfox
Yeah, it's not that are supposed to be there, its just some make their way in now and again.
tommyd
Some fit vending machines, parking meters, etc. and can be a real headache for vendors.

Mexico, 2004, One Peso bi-metalic coin.

Tuesday night I got a 1945 and a 1947-D cent in change in the same transaction. After asking the cashier to check for more, they were the onliest ones.

Even though it is easily determined whether or not this is the BIG ONE, my heart always races for a moment or two when one of these turns up in change. I found this one in a Have A Penny/Take a Penny tray today at the local gas station. I traded for it of course.

Nice trade.

I'm surprised that I don't find much in the cash drawer at work. I would say that the majority of purchases are credit or debit cards, and the cash flowing in consists of lots of $20, 50, 100 bills.

The only things I've found since July have been one 1948 Lincoln and a 1945-S Jefferson(in horrible shape).

That's how it was when I worked at Domino's about six years ago. Nothing but credit/debit cards and checks. Rarely would someone pay in cash other than my dad. Couldn't imagine how it is now. Heck, even my parents are thinking about debit cards. shok.gif Everything they purchase is through checks while I deal only in cash.

Latest find was a 1963 Roosevelt in VF that I ended up losing a day later. It's either around the house or my cat ate it.

I guess you'll be cleaning the cat box for the next few days.

Got a '64 Rosie in the CoinStar last Saturday.

Although I may be a slightly obsessed collector, by no means will I did through cat poo for a '63 Roosie.

Now if it was a Morgan dollar and a cow ate it......where's my gloves? hysterical.gif

This time I was smart and put it in a 2x2. If the cat can eat a 2x2 with staples and coin, more power to him.

I just don't want to be the cat in 24-48 hours. smile.gif

Ooh! 1949-S nickel found in brother's pocket change.

It's in good hands now. I need it for my album.

I really have the yen to go and get a bunch of halves to look through. No time right now but the desire is gettting stronger everyday.

I plan on doing some roll searching this break. I have one burning question for the roll searchers out there:

What is the best combination of rolls to get for a given amount of money?

In other words, suppose I want to only spend $20. Should I get 1 roll of quarters, 1 roll of dimes, 2 rolls of nickels, and 2 rolls of pennies? What combinations do you sort through/recommend?

After Xmas I may shell out for more than $20 giving me more options.

Thanks,

George

Spend $25 and get a box of pennies, contains 2500 coins. About 500-700 of them should be bronze, about 10-15 s/b wheats. Nickels are also good to search. Dimes and Quarters, forget about it. Halves can be good if you can find them, you can even get Walkers, Franklins and silver Kennedy's.

shok.gif Finding an al cent is way cool! Zinc cents are pretty neat as well.

Got a 2003W $1. Pretty scruffed up, looks like it's been liberated from a PL set a few months earlier.

Searched some cents today. I didn't specifically buy rolls to search but my cent coffee can was overflowing, so I rolled a few. Looked at a bit over 800 cents and found:

183 copper and 600 zinc.
Two coppers were wheaties (1955 & 1958-D).
Out of 30 1982s (D and P), 28 were copper.

Found a couple of filled mint marks and the only other notable find was a very brassy looking zincoln - shown here next to a typical 1994. Caught my eye right away.

IPB Image

Weight, however, is right on target with the zincoln (2.46 gms). Maybe I will do a specific gravity test, but I think it is just a zincoln that, somehow, got a weird color.

If I remember correctly, there are some "brass" zinc'ers that are the result of zinc getting into the copper for plating, resulting in a brass plating.

Hmm interesting possibility - I wonder if there is a way to definitively tell if that is the case with this coin.

Surface conductivity measurements anyone?

Surface conductivity measurements anyone?

How do you suggest that "Surface conductivity" be measured? Using a decent Ohm meter, I can not distinguish copper from copper-plated from potentially brass plated - all give readings near .1 on the lowest scale, as I would expect.

Did a little bit of digging and ccg's memory is correct as Ken Porter's site sells some of these and shows a letter from the mint acknowledging that zinc can be inadvertantly dissolved in the copper plating rendering such a color (link here).

CopperCoins says that there is virtually no way to distinguish a brass-plated cent from one that has miscolored due to other contaminants.

Certainly there is a way of detecting the content of the plating, but I do not have easy access to any destructive flame mass spectroscopy whatchyamhiggie.

I shall keep thinking about this.

I've got access to equipment that can measure the conductivity of the plating on the surface. It doesn't penetrate the material too far.

Also if you want to get really nutty, electron microscopy can easily determine the surface's composition.

Of course, it's all a bit overkill don't you think?

Was able to pick up 11 rolls (at face value) of 1964 Kennedy Halves that were in my local bank's vault since 1964 in a box. There were more rolls total but I was able to get 11 for myself. I feel very lucky to have part of a "hoard" even as small as this one... smile.gif

I dont have pics of it but I got a 1926 lincoln in change the other day.
I would grade it maybe F-8 but it's a find none the less.

a 1933-D wheatback in change....not picked out of a register for once lol. Kinda ugly, maybe a AG/G since its a little pourus.
